If you spend your computer time in the browser, checking email, using Google Docs, watching Netflix, or making Zoom calls, Chrome OS is all you need. But if you need specialized software for work or school, want to play Windows-specific games, or need to be able to work offline, you’re better off using Windows.
A Windows laptop under $500 can handle your web browsing, video calling, and media consumption, but it’s rare: Most Windows laptops buckle under the strain of running more than a few programs at once . And buying a bad laptop can cost you more in the long run: Compared to an $800 laptop, it’ll feel worse in daily use after two years, and you’ll need to replace it sooner. Even $550, if you can swing it, will definitely buy you a faster computer that lasts longer.
If you don’t need Windows, if you prefer Apple platforms, or if you watch videos and play games, consider an iPad with a keyboard. Compared to a budget Windows laptop, this hybrid feels much faster when playing e-mail, watching movies, or taking notes, and while Chromebooks force you to rely on web apps and Android apps designed for mobile, you can find thousands of iPads — apps and improved games. But the combination of an iPad and a keyboard is not a complete replacement for a laptop.

Why we like it: If you want an affordable laptop that’s fun to use, we recommend the Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook (13″) over a similarly priced Windows laptop. The Flex 5i is the best Chromebook: It offers faster performance, has a better keyboard and pad, is shorter and lighter, and its 1080p touchscreen is bright and shiny. This Chromebook is faster than Windows laptops in tasks that most people use laptops for, including browsing the web (even with multiple tabs open), making video calls, working on documents and spreadsheets, and watching movies. And the Flex 5i is more portable than budget Windows options and has no bloatware that slows them down.
Where it fails: Aside from the ChromeOS limitations outlined above, the Flex 5i has no major flaws. Its battery will last a full day at work or in the classroom, but it fell several hours short of our other Chromebook options in our tests. So it can be very difficult at the end of the whole day if you are not able to connect to your laptop. We also found that the cover can be difficult; I often found myself needing two hands to open the Flex 5i.
The Flip C536 has a large 15.6-inch screen and built-in numeric keypad, but it’s too big and heavy for frequent travel.

Why we like it: If you want a big screen and number keys, we recommend the Asus Chromebook Flip C536 (C536EA-BI3T3). The Flip C536’s backlit keys and extra-wide trackpad are satisfying and responsive. But while the C536 will last a long time away from the store, it’s too big and heavy to carry around all the time.
Where it fails: The 15-inch display makes the Flip C536 heavier and larger, so it’s less portable than our other picks—we wouldn’t recommend it if you need a laptop to take to work, class, or even the coffee shop. . For some reason the C536 has a 360-degree hinge, but it’s too heavy to turn and use comfortably in some situations.
