So, I decided to make essential oil candles because I’m greedy and I want the best of both worlds. Who knew how fast learning to make candles would be? Of course I had to share! So here is the easiest way to make DIY candles.

DIY candles are so easy to make guys! Of all the projects involving essential oils, making DIY essential oil candles was one I was most nervous about. I had no experience with candle making and it seemed really scary, even for a super geek like me.
Fortunately, it was very easy to do! Seriously, if you’re a Christmas girl like me, give these easy DIY essential oil candles a try!
Chances are, if you’re reading this blog, you may already have a favorite brand, which is great. However, if you are lost in the sea of trying to discover the best essential oil brands, here are some ideas. I used Young Living and was happy with it, but switched completely to herbalism.

If you have kids around, you have to be very aware of what they’re inhaling and make sure it’s 100% safe, which is another reason I switched to herbal therapy – they have a whole collection of essential oils for kids. At the end of the day, as long as you use a 100% essential oil brand, you’ll be fine. My biggest advice is don’t use your most expensive oil…you will use a lot of oil to smell good. Stock up on the really, really good stuff and use the cheaper oils here.

Use the center of the wick to find the center of your wick, then attach it with the stickers in this kit or hot glue. Make sure the wick is centered and straight! If your container is too wide for the wick center tool, you can use something like an orange stick or paint brush to center it and hold the wick (see step 5 photo for example).
I find that about 3 cups of wax at a time is about right, but how much you need depends on the size of your container. You can always add more! Melt the wax in the microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring each time until completely melted.
You can use any perfume you like, but keep in mind that it takes a lot of oil to make a perfume… I did 30 drops and the scent is very, very subtle. I would suggest 40+ which sounds like overkill, but it’s not for that, I promise. Before adding oils – read this section on the flash point of essential oils. This is essential information for making scented candles that actually smell!
How To Make Candles At Home
If you put the wash in the fridge it hardens faster – but I left mine overnight and it was fine the next morning.
Cut the kernel to 1/4 inch above the wax. I think technically there are some cool tools you can use to do this, but I just used scissors.

That said, some essential oils perform better at high heat than others, such as hot melt soy wax, due to their different flash points. According to this helpful post, it’s important to know which scents work best for your scented candles. The higher the flash point, the more heat the oil can withstand.
A low flash point doesn’t mean that the oil won’t necessarily work in the candle, but it does mean that you have to let the wax cool down first. The best way is to use a Christmas thermometer to check
And check when the wax has cooled enough to safely add the oil without losing its properties. The melting point of soy wax is around 140 degrees, so plan carefully to get the most out of your scented candles!
Easy Ways To Freshen Your Home Using Essential Oils
If you’re making your own scented candles with essential oils, you’ll want to use a lot of oil, as the scent will cloud significantly when poured into the wax. For this reason, I recommend using at least 45 drops per 8 oz candle – and that’s for a light scent!
It’s also important to distribute the oils evenly: soy wax candles work well in DIY scented candles because they melt easily, so you can drip and stir the essential oils before the hardening wax is completely distributed.
