We always test battery life for our reviews, so we have a large database of battery life test results. This helps us objectively evaluate and compare smartphone battery experiences for you. To do this, one must have a fair and repeatable way to test battery life. Here is ours:

It’s a fairly simple but effective test that simulates performance-heavy applications like photo processing and gaming. The countless texts flow in a loop until the phone runs out of juice. It’s a pretty brutal test and serves as a good worst-case scenario for battery life. The more tests a phone can perform, the better the battery life will be in the real world.

The final results of the test are interesting for a couple of reasons. First, out of the three devices with 5000 mAh batteries, only one of them made the top five. Even then it was extremely close between him and the two of them. This shows that the size of the battery alone is not everything. The combination of hardware and software optimizations play a big role in the overall picture. Motorola’s Edge Plus, for example, finished in tenth place despite its large 5,000mAh battery. This is likely due to its 90Hz display, Snapdragon 865 chipset and perhaps less optimized software.

There are a few general trends worth noting. The first is that Chinese brands tend to do very well, partly because of their take on Android. Huawei and Xiaomi, for example, are known for aggressive software optimization to extend battery life. So it is no surprise to see all three P40 flagships of this year in our top 10. Second, the best smartphones now offer more than five hours of screen time even under heavy use, which is very impressive. All but the OnePlus 8 Pro with its 120Hz display breaks the four-hour mark.

With that in mind, none of the top five phones in our results have 120Hz screens – only 60Hz or 90Hz. These very high refresh rate monitors consume a lot of juice. However, all devices in the top six come with top-of-the-line processors. The LG Velvet, which came in seventh, has a mid-range Snapdragon 765G chip and a 60Hz display. Both use less power than their competitors, suggesting they should be ranked higher. Ultimately, though, the Velvet ends up lower than the V60 ThinQ, which shares the same software but packs in a bigger battery. At the end of the day, it’s pretty hard to tell which phones will last the longest just by looking at a specific sheet.

Charging speed is the other half of the battery equation. Smartphone charging speeds have improved significantly over the past five years, and companies advertise fast charging technology as much as battery size these days. We test load speeds with every review we publish, so we’ve seen progress first hand. The graphs below show the phones with the fastest charging speed over time and also ranked in mAh per minute. In other words, this reflects how quickly the charging technology fills a battery.

Realme’s X50 Pro 5G wins here with the only result above 100 mAh/min at 127 mAh/min. Although the Huawei P40 Pro Plus has the same battery size, Realme charges its cell in less than half the time with its SuperDart Flash Charge technology. This is made more impressive by the fact that the X50 Pro 5G is the third cheapest smartphone on this list.

The second fastest charging phone is the Oppo Find X2 Pro. BBK technology is hard at work here, allowing a charging time of 43 minutes thanks to its speed of 99mAh/min. However, the results start to lag after the fourth result. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is significantly slower to charge than the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro at a speed of 78mAh/min versus 98mAh/min. However, in general, many of these smartphones fully charge in about an hour or less. Perfect if you need a quick recharge.

And the winner is … Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro! He took the lead by a good margin over both. However, the Mi 10 Pro only has a 4,500mAh cell. This is significantly less than the V60 ThinQ, Galaxy S20 Ultra and others that the Mi 10 Pro beats. This amazing battery life is thanks to Xiaomi’s software optimization, which works in the background to keep the phone powered longer. This involves closing applications that are not in use (a controversial practice), adjusting CPU speed to match the workload, and disabling features when they are not needed.

There are hardware features that also play a role in this. The FHD 90Hz display draws less power than its competitors’ QHD and 120Hz panels. Also, the device ships in 60Hz mode out of the box and it is up to the user to set the device to 90Hz in the settings menu. This lower refresh rate significantly improves battery life because it uses less power. If you are interested, the Mi 10 Pro worked for almost exactly 6 hours (2nd place) with 90Hz activated. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro also doesn’t come with face unlock sensors on the front that work constantly. Again, this choice of hardware saves power compared to some of its competitors. Given a 5,000 mAh cell, the Mi 10 Pro could possibly hit the 500-minute mark – something no phone has reached to date.

However, this amazing battery life comes at a price. We noticed that the Mi 10 Pro takes a slightly more conservative approach to top performance compared to the similarly specced Poco F2 Pro. This may explain its long battery life with the added benefit of more sustainable performance. Likewise, Xiaomi seems to push its app deletion a little too far at times – it shuts down background music and podcast apps you’re actually using. Xiaomi devices are also known for slow notifications as a result of cutting the network connection to conserve battery.

The numbers don’t lie. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro shared more than seven hours of screen time in our review. Our time in the lab confirms that it is indeed what you can expect from the phone. We’re impressed by how far you can push the Mi 10 Pro before needing a boost. The device also came third in our battery load test, providing not only great battery life, but a great overall battery experience.

We have a common runner-up for the Best of Android Mid-2020 Battery – Huawei P40 Pro Plus and Huawei P40 Pro. Both share the same processing hardware and 4,200 mAh battery and have more than 6 hours of grueling test time. Huawei is known for a heavy approach to removing applications and optimizing RAM, which certainly helps these phones to get ahead of the pack. However, these two phones are two of the most inconsistent we’ve tested due to their nifty resolution and refresh rate settings. When rendering 3D content, the screen sometimes switches to 90Hz, but mostly stays locked at 60Hz. Likewise, the 3D screen resolution is often set to 1,760 x 800 instead of 2,640 x 1,200. This gave us test result times between 5.5 and almost 7 hours, with just over 6 being the average. Of course, you don’t need to worry about the battery life of this phone, but the results will certainly vary.

Third place is a highly contested position, with the LG V60 ThinQ 5G moving a few minutes ahead of the Poco F2 Pro, Huawei P40 and LG Velvet. All of these phones clock in at over 5 hours of test time with Speed​​​​Test G, ensuring that they will easily last a full day or more. But the LG V60 just shows that a colossal 5,000 mAh battery can still push its way into first place.
