There are tons of armors to choose from in Skyrim, but we’ve selected some of the best picks in each category based on their utility and special benefits.
The Best Armor In Skyrim
There are three types of Skyrim armor: heavy armor, light armor, and shields. Suits, of the player’s choice, do not technically count as armor, as they provide enhancement but not actual protection. Heavy armor affects your movement, but is also ideal for tanks and other frontline fighters. Light armor is for stealthy buildings and more mobile dragons, and shields are…shields.
Skyrim: 10 Must Have Armors For Any Type Of Character
We’ve listed our top picks for each type based on their overall armor rating and the perks they offer when the full set is equipped.
Daedric Armor may not have any special advantages, but it is the most powerful and beautiful armor in Skyrim, without any additional effects. Starting at level 49, you’ll find the Demon Armor as a boss fight reward.
Dragonplate Armor is a close second, though it also has no special advantages. You can craft it yourself once your forge level is around 100 or higher, and you’ll need the Dragon Armor perk to do so.
Skyrim Best Armor
Ebony armor is slightly weaker than other armor unless you use a shield (then it’s even stronger than fiend armor). The biggest attraction is carrying the ebony you picked up in the Boethiah’s Demon quest. It gives you a unique perk that poisons nearby enemies and also casts Muffle on them. The rest of the set can be found starting at level 32, including the forge.
Skyrim’s light armor is a bit more interesting, as many of the best suits have a range of perks and magic. Light armor is best for agile buildings and stealth, although some suits can even compete with heavy armor protection without much strain.
This set has it all. It looks good, it’s sturdy when you wear every piece, and every part of the outfit has a wonderful array of benefits. You’ll get the set by completing Thieves Guild’s “Trinity Restored”, so most of its perks naturally revolve around stealth and stealth. The only downside is the slight reduction in illusion spells, though a skilled assassin would still be fine.
The Best Skyrim Builds For All Races
Deathbrand armor reduces weight and increases durability, but the full set also gives you a +100 armor boost. It’s also easy to find, although the chest containing each item only appears in the Deathbrand quest.
Compared to the other two, this one is a little more plain, but if you just want high defense, this is the way to go. The problem is the rarity of dragonscale armor. You can only find it randomly starting at level 50, although the Dragon Armor perk also gives you a small chance of finding it at lower levels.
You may be tempted to stick with whatever shield matches the armor you’re using so you can increase your armor. However, some of Skyrim’s best shields have abilities worth sacrificing armor for.
Skyrim Armor Insanity
There’s still a lot to do before you get this one. In the Dawnguard quest line, you will travel to the Forgotten Valley. Use the Paragon Ruby on the platform near the Paragon Platform, then go through the portal to the Forgotten Vale Forest. Defeat the Falmer Warmonger to get the shield.
Auriel’s shield stores the energy of blocked attacks and releases it as extra power when you use the Heavy Attack action.
It may not seem like much compared to other shields, but the Aether Shield makes up for the low defense with its special abilities. Hitting an enemy turns them into ether for 15 seconds, during which time they cannot attack you. You will craft an Ethereal Shield as part of the “Lost Age” quest.

Shield of Solitude is more shield-like than the other shields we’ve chosen. In addition to high defense, it has the added bonus of increasing magic resistance by 30% and damage blocking by 35%. Get this after completing Awakened Wolf.
The best armor is only half the battle. You’ll need some of Skyrim’s best weapons to stay alive, and only then can you make one of Skyrim’s best builds.

Skyrim Light Armor: Best Light Armors Ranked
Essential to almost any game, the best light, heavy and shields in Skyrim are worth keeping track of.
In general, the armor you choose will depend on your playstyle. Classes that require a good ability to sneak up on enemies and quickly escape incoming attackers will benefit from light armor. Those who want melee, take heavy hits, but don’t care about stealthy methods will prefer heavy armor.
Meanwhile, for those who prefer the benefits of light armor but still want to fight in open close combat, shields are an option to help improve the defensive attributes of light armor wearers, while for those who already wear heavy armor it’s a bit redundant to humans.
