Chicken Point Cabin By Olson Kundig Architects – The owners of Chicken Point Cabin bought a piece of waterfront property half an hour from their home in northern Idaho to build a lakeside cabin. Their purpose is to use the house all year round, but especially in the summer when the weather is too hot. Their instructions were simple: keep the house as open to water as possible. The design’s response to this challenge was as direct as the request: a large revolving picture window on the water side literally opens the house to the view.
A hand-operated crank opens a wall of windows 20 by 30 feet. Using the principle of counter-balancing from a bicycle-like set of gears, a six-tonne steel and glass window can be rotated with minimal force. Although the Gizmo uses complex mechanical engineering, the result is nothing like opening a tent door that allows fresh air and unobstructed views into the room.

A plywood loft with the master suite is suspended on a concrete block shell, overlooking the living room, while additional bedrooms and service areas are saddled on either side of the main volume.
