Safeway Mix And Match Rules – We’ve had many discussions with other bargain hunters about where to find the best grocery deals in town. For many, Safeway is at the top of the list. To be fair, we know that many readers feel that Safeway is “too expensive.” However, we’ve found plenty of savings at Safeway (especially since it was acquired by Albertsons), so we’ve created a guide to the best deals and discounts in their aisles. We have decades of experience as Safeway customers and bargain hunters, so we hope we can provide some “valuable” information. (We’ve been known to save over 75% on our grocery bill).
It’s important to note that Safeway is the only grocery chain that will double coupons in Colorado. (After years of offering savings coupons, King Soopers stopped doubling coupons in August 2016.) This is one of the best strategies for selling savings. As a result, the policy offers a significant money-saving advantage when you shop at Safeway compared to other chains. More details below.

Store Hours: Safeway is open 7 days a week. Most places are open every day from 5 am to midnight. (There are no 24-hour locations.) Safeway is usually closed only one day a year: Christmas. Click here for locations.
Safeway May Build Store At Alameda Landing
The Lowdown: Safeway began operations in Colorado in 1932. Today, there are 102 locations in Colorado. Since it was acquired by Albertsons in January 2015, its sales and promotions have become a hybrid of both chains. Here in Colorado, most existing Albertson’s locations converted to Safeway in late 2016. (There are still 7 Albertson’s locations in Colorado: Durango, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs and Pueblo. On March 1, Albertson’s locations in Ft. Collins and Loveland.will become Safeway).
Loyalty Program: The fastest way to get savings is to sign up for your Safeway Club Card. Membership is free. The buyer loyalty program is the only way to get sale prices. Plus, it’s the only way to earn fuel points to save money at the pump. As a member, you also have access to exclusive bonus offers, gifts and/or discounts. Once you sign up, simply enter your phone number at checkout to get all the savings. Without it, you’ll be paying full price and missing out on a lot of deals, so it’s silly not to join.
As an added incentive, the loyalty program also includes Just For U, a personalized program that offers discounts on previously purchased items. Once you create a purchase history, you will be able to download offers to your account just for you. (For example, if you buy bananas regularly, you may see an offer for a lower price per pound, which is not available to the general public.) New offers are added every week. Note: Offers are not automatically applied to your account, you must download them to your card.

In our experience, we’ve had a few issues with using Just For U offers. One of the biggest is simply that the discount doesn’t apply at checkout. Because inspections can be quick, an eagle eye is needed to spot mistakes. Smart shoppers should always check their receipt before leaving the store. Bring your smartphone or print those offers to settle any discount disputes. In most cases, the customer service office will be happy to resolve the discrepancy and refund the price difference.
Clearance: Safeway has clearance items, also known as “manager’s specials.” These are usually a few shelves or racks dedicated only to clearance items. (Some stores place items on one or two grocery carts, usually near the store entrance to catch your eye.) The location varies from store to store, but for the most part, it’s in the back of the store. Find where it’s located in your store and make it a permanent stop on your shopping route. (If you can’t find it at all, ask an employee for its location.)
On these shelves you will find discarded items, spoiled or opened products, “old” packaging and excess stock. It’s even better because you’ll always find discounted baked goods at really sweet prices, usually 50% off. As bargain hunters, we have no problem with damaged or opened packaging as long as the item inside is intact. (Heavily dented cans, however, are not recommended, especially if they are bulging or rusted.) The clearance at Safeway is often “feast or famine,” smothered with bargains, or nearly bare. That’s why it’s important to check it every time you shop because it changes every day.
You can also find free space on the regular shelves. Closed items are usually marked with a red tag. MHOTC Tip: You can use coupons on clearance items to make the savings really noticeable. With this, you can easily save 75% or more on an item.
Free: Safeway does not offer any free items on a regular basis. The only option to get free items is to join their Just For U loyalty program. Sometimes they offer a free item to select members, usually a new product or flavor. Just For U is customized, so the process of offering these types of coupons is not fully known. We know some customers who have never received a free item, while others receive a free item every week. (The program’s algorithms are based on trading habits and money spent).

. (You can also access the ad online.) In the circular, you can not only check sale prices, find tons of store coupons to grab*, as well as other money-saving promotions. Sale prices are usually valid from Wednesday to Tuesday of the following week. (* You can also digitally add store coupons to your Safeway Club Card account.)
Rain Check: When an item for sale is out of stock, don’t waste time running from place to place on a “treasure hunt”. Safeway will offer a rain check on any advertised item that is out of stock. Request a rain check at checkout or at the customer service desk. Rain checks expire 30 days after they are issued. Also, you can only buy up to 6 items per rain check, less if specified. (Note: For special sales, usually $5 on Fridays or 3-day weekends, they do not issue rain checks.)
Mobile App: For added convenience, Safeway has an app for customers to save money and save time. In the app, you can download coupons from manufacturers and digital stores, create a shopping list, view weekly ads, view Just For U offers, track fuel points, find stores and more. Online Coupons: Safeway does not offer printable online coupons. However, you can download digital coupons to your Safeway Club Card to use in store. Available coupons are updated every week (usually on Wednesdays), so it’s important to check and download new coupons often. Like paper coupons, digital coupons have an expiration date – keep track of all downloaded coupons in your account. You can also add store coupons to your card instead of clipping them from the weekly print ad.
Bundle discounts: Thanks to the Albertsons acquisition, many of Safeway’s sales are buying more, saving more. Almost every week, the grocery chain offers additional savings if you buy more than one particular product line. For example, if you buy 3 items, you will save another dollar off each item or the entire package. If you do the math, the savings can be big on your bottom line.
Often, buying just one or two items will be the same price you would pay without saving coupons. (For those who say, “But I don’t need 6 cans of pasta sauce.” “Mini-store” at home and save the extras for future use. It’s worth the space and time when you don’t have to pay full. Remember that you can use manufacturer coupons for discounts, except for very large savings.

Manufacturer and Store Coupon Policy: As mentioned above, Safeway is the only major chain in the metro Denver area that doubles coupons. (Safeway does not have a specific digital coupon policy.) Here is the coupon policy:
Double coupons: Safeway is the only major grocery retailer that still doubles coupons in the Denver metro area. Manufacturer coupons double up to $1. Unless otherwise specified in the coupon, any coupon up to 50¢ will be doubled to $1. Any coupon between 51¢ and 99¢ will have the remaining amount deducted for a total savings of $1. (For example, a 75¢ off coupon will add 25¢ for the maximum savings). When you combine double coupons on sale prices and/or store coupons, the savings can be significant, sometimes up to 75% off and free.
