I grew up in a small town in Connecticut where such a scene would not have happened even in my wildest hormonal dreams. But now I’m working for Vini “Big Daddy” Bergeman, the limousine king of Los Angeles, and things are starting to get weird.

In the mid-1980s, I was selling cars at a dealership in Compton while presenting my graphic design portfolio for an interview at an advertising agency. I’m a car enthusiast, interested in sports car racing and classic Porsches, but after seeing some crazy custom stuff rolling around LA, I had to be a part of that world.

On a whim, I went to the Ultra Limousine office in La Palma. A Cadillac block limousine was parked by the building with a pickup truck grill. I camped out in the lobby and waited for Vini to appear. When he finally did, I was shocked. He can literally fill a room.

Vini told me in a loud voice and a strong picture of the Bronx that I could have five minutes. I don’t have a game plan. Jack, I know about limousines, but I’m very enthusiastic. Somehow we managed and I left with work. Even now, I think he only hired me because I had a good camera and was a Yankee fan, just like him.

Vini’s bona fides in New York are strong. At age 20, he moved to LA with $16 in his pocket. He once served prison time as a teenager, but now he’s determined to start over. He soon teamed up with legendary tuner George Barris, with whom Vini was able to improve his already impressive metalworking skills. After a few years he went out on his own.

Adopting a version of the Barris naming convention, Cs-Ks launched Kolor Me Kustom. Like Barris, Vini specializes in creating custom cars for the Hollywood crowd. His 1973 Dodge Tradesman “Vandamonium” became an icon of the van craze. At one point in the van’s many variations, it featured the front end of a Dodge Polara that looked like the van had swallowed the car whole.

In the late 1970s, with his custom metalwork, fabrication and painting attracting high-profile clients, Vini saw great opportunity in LA’s booming stretch limousine business. At a time when regular stretches carry an extra 33 to 48 inches of length, Vini thinks bigger. Ever the showman, in 1978 he took a Lincoln Town Car, already 19.4 feet long, and extended it by more than nine feet. He added dual axles and what the hell, a hot tub in the back. Ultra Limousine was born.

Over the years, Ultra has created custom one-offs for several celebrities: a Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL for Sylvester Stallone (used in Rocky IV), a luxurious gold Town Car with a television towering from the center. console for mr. T, a high-tech Chevy Suburban designed for actor Larry Hagman that he used on the TV show “Dallas.” Vini builds cars for rappers, gangsters and sports stars.

He built several cars for Rocky Aoki, founder of the Benihana restaurant chain (and father of DJ Steve Aoki). One of them is the Porsche 911 Targa driven by the flamboyant businessman in the Cannonball One Lap of America 1991. Vini also built a stretch Hummer H1 for modern-day musician Yanni, almost the last vehicle you’d imagine a great drive. But such is the charm of Vini’s creation.

Some wild projects are created for show rather than function. Vini once asked me to sketch a Lamborghini Countach limousine that he built out of fiberglass. An impressive sight, it’s actually powered by a mid-mounted V6 from a Ford Taurus. Later, Vini built a large Harley sedan on a GM chassis to promote his Ultra Cycle motorcycle dealership. The beast actually moves under its own power and can carry 10 people in its hidden luxury lounge.

The recently highlighted Maserati Quattroporte 1983 The Drive section is one of the Ultra versions. It’s similar to the one built for LA Rams coach Ron Brown, who made a brief cameo in the movie “Running Man.” I spent some time driving the car and it felt more like a race-ready Miata than a big Lincoln. He only carried about 300 extra pounds and was pretty skinny by stretch limousine standards. The interior is beautiful; it’s less refined than Lincolns and Caddys and is finished in the same beautiful leather as the factory model.

Despite the one-time madness and great stretch that got publicity, Vini and his partner Kraig Kavanaugh soon realized that his core business was making standard limousines for rental fleets. They do it better than almost anyone else while setting new standards in length and construction. Ultra revolutionized the industry, producing production models ranging in length from 63 to 120 inches. Vini also developed a wide-body Cadillac. The sides of the car have been trimmed and an extra 10 inches added to create an unusually spacious interior. It’s not practical from a production standpoint, but Vini proves it can be done.

Contrary to perception, the all-steel Ultra build used to rebuild it is in some ways structurally stronger than the original car. Whenever one of his limousines crashed, Vini would point out that the part of the car that was stretched was still intact, even though the rest of the car was intact. Ultra has taken the next step in crash testing its cars to obtain the rigorous Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) and Cadillac Master Coachbuilder certifications. To this day I can say an ultra-built car. Unlike many old stretch limousines, there is no sag in the middle of the car and the doors will stay open and closed.

True to its roots, Vini insists on perfect exterior metalwork. Most coaches put padded vinyl tops on their cars to hide the poor finish, but Vini often branded his cars with painted steel roofs to show quality. Kraig handled the interior design, while Vini focused on the exterior and overall construction. They created a great team and the company grew to more than 600 units
