We spoke to Stanley Jackson, director of topiary company Agrumi, to find out about their expert work and find some great tips on how to create the perfect topiary in your own garden.

Starting almost 10 years ago, Agrumi moved from Italy to the New Forest, providing topiary in both custom and classic forms. 1. If you have a dense, small-leaved plant in your garden – perhaps a yew or box variety – you can easily shape it into a ball or pyramid. You can buy cutting shapes to help. You should trim the plant regularly as it grows, but leave 3-5 cm each time to get it in shape.

3. The best type of plants for topiary depends on its purpose, desired effect and time available. Our plant of choice for long-lasting effect is Box-Leafed Privet – Ligustrum delawayanum (
). This compact, evergreen shrub has oval dark green leaves and small white flowers in early summer, followed by blue-black berries. It takes a while to grow before it reaches its prime, but it looks good after a season. It is elastic and easily woven into wire frames.

5. Whichever topiary plant you choose, the advice for its care is the same. A deep, fertile, well-drained soil in a protected, partially shaded place is ideal.

9. Repot the plant in a larger pot every two years. If you can’t, take the plant out of the pot and carefully remove some of the roots and soil from the root ball with a sharp knife. Turning bushes and hedges into impressive sculptures is something people have practiced since ancient Roman times, believe it or not. But today it is fronted by mansions, botanical gardens and sports. No joke. There are actually hedge carving competitions all over the world.
But it is not just a simple idea to trim a bush in a certain shape. Topiary is another form of art where you start with a wire frame and grow the bush around it, trimming if necessary. Good fun, isn’t it? So, for your amusement and my own, I’ve rounded up some of the most impressive shrub and bush sculptures that you have to see to believe.

Disney World is full of topiaries and bush sculptures. Literally, they are everywhere. With the upcoming release of the new live action Beauty and the Beast movie, I had to start this list with The Beast! How cool is this? Very detailed and true to the original character from the cartoon we all grew up with.
Organizing an image like this requires some serious skill. I mean, look! As the image turns into a vase shape reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, many colors and varieties of flowers and the setting where they flow.
If you like Finding Nemo or fishing in general, check this out. Some parts are non-veg, but the image is too cool to list. It is built in an angle, so it seems to jump out of the garden from other bush sculptures.

I love owls, don’t you? They are huge now and can be found everywhere from bedding to tattoos. Well, apparently, in the form of bush sculptures. However, you have to admit it’s pretty awesome. Very detailed, very interesting.
How inviting is this? I wonder if it will actually support the weight of someone sitting on it. Either way, it’s pretty unique. Yes, a couch by itself might not be that impressive. But the inclusion of a person in the design is great.
Do you recognize this legendary dancing couple? Before the clock strikes 12, Cinderella and her prince dance. This is another Disney World treasure. Apparently I have to go there and witness these beautiful topiaries.

The story of Peter Pan and Captain Hook would not be complete without the clockwork that swallowed Hook’s hand. I think Disney World would agree. It is a very impressive specimen and makes a beautiful shrub sculpture.
I love penguins. Next to dogs, they are my favorite animal on the face of the planet. But I couldn’t find dog bush sculptures. So, here’s a penguin that looks like it’s losing belly hair!
This pair of teddy bears is looking at some flower pots. They were almost nowhere to be seen behind the ball bushes that Fuss had sculpted.

So, we saw Disney characters, farm animals and fish. Now it’s time for living objects. Like this piano for example. Not only is it a great representation of a real piano, it’s no ordinary green!
Now back to the animals, but of a less handsome nature. I mean, unless you like snakes (I don’t). This bush sculpture is absolutely beautiful, but I would never leave my house if it was in my front yard.
If you have a ton of bushes on your property and no idea what to do with them, here is a great idea to try. Looks like someone got bored and turned all their trees into swirls.

PORTSMOUTH — Sculptures are an exercise in patience — a few shrubs that took months to grow from carefully arranged branches into works of art.

On Douglas and Bonnie Thompson’s Portsmouth lawn, one is shaped like a heart and the other says “love.”
Every two weeks on Friday they prune the bushes. Passers-by often stopped to take pictures and say hello. A fan left a spice cake for the Thompsons; Another person sent an anonymous letter saying that the sculptures make them laugh.
Douglas, 61, started framing the fence on his lawn about five years ago. The US Coast Guard veteran started with the heart, but his neighbors didn’t realize the sculpture was made of natural plant material – not plastic.
