National Black Cat Appreciation Day (august 17th)
1. Although a black cat crossing your path is considered bad luck, in some countries it is the opposite.
In most of the United States, superstitious people go out of their way to avoid crossing paths with black cats, but that’s not the case in other parts of the world. In parts of England, Asia and Ireland, when a black cat crosses your path, it means good luck.
Melanism is basically the opposite of albinism. Too much melanin in these cats is what makes their fur so dark. Basically, these cats have too much melanin, which causes their irises to turn golden/yellow.
National Day Calendar: Black Cat Appreciation Day
Does anyone remember the smart black cat named Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch? This story and association comes from people who believed that cats turned into black cats or used them as they knew. Black cats are often believed to be witches because they are almost invisible in the dark of night.
There are many varieties of black cats, but there are a limited number of breeds that can officially list “black” as a color option, according to the Cat Fanciers Association. Only about 22 brands can list black as a color option.
Black cats are closely associated with Halloween. In some parts of the world, black cats are considered menaces or animals to be sacrificed around Halloween. How bad is that? For this reason, many animal shelters will not return black cats in the weeks surrounding Halloween or in October.

6. To be a true black cat, both of its parents must have the black gene.
Black genes predominate, but the dominant coat pattern is soft. This means that there are two strong black genes that will overcome the bead shape that produces multiple fur colors.
Black cats may develop white fur as they age. Just as human hair turns gray over time, all cats change color as they age. It is more obvious in black cats, however, because of their black fur.
Happy Cat Month September 2023
Well, not literally, but if your black cat spends too much time in the sun, its fur can turn a dark reddish brown. This is called “corrosion”. This is temporary. when a cat’s melanin levels return to normal, so will its coat color.
According to research, it is likely that cats with black fur have a higher resistance to disease and are more resistant to diseases such as feline HIV.
Although their history is associated with anarchy and witches, these cats do not bring bad luck and have nothing to do with black magic. The behavior of these cats is similar to the behavior of other cats. So the next time a black cat crosses your path, you have no reason to worry.
Here’s Why We Celebrate National Black Cat Day
Carianne Luter is a social media producer and has been with Channel 4 since December 2015. She graduated from the University of North Florida with a degree in communications. Every year since 2011, August 1-17 is known as Black Cat Appreciation Day. It was originally started in honor of a woman devoted to her black cat “Sinbad”. This special day of the year is now used to remind everyone of the value of black cats, dispel prejudice and encourage people to give new homes to black cats left in animal shelters.
The myths surrounding these dark, elegant, soft grasses date back centuries and continue to this day. Unfortunately, they often have a negative cycle. Records show that black cats were associated with witchcraft as far back as the 13th century, when Pope Gregory IX issued an official church document on June 13, 1233, titled “Vox in Rama.” In it, black cats were especially associated with Satan. 2 This could be. help explain why the myth persists to this day that a black cat will bring you good luck if it crosses your path.
Unfortunately, such old myths have real-world consequences. In shelters, black cats have to wait longer to be adopted than cats of other colors; a fate they share with other domesticated animals such as dogs with black coats.3

They are very cute and seductive with their yellow and green eyes that know everything, but black cats rarely get good press, even though they are just as popular as other cats. Let’s take a look at the facts about this national day that honors cute, adorable cats and why it was created in the first place.
Have you ever been afraid of a black cat crossing your path? This comes from ancient mythology where people believed it meant bad luck. In many cultures and historical places, black cats are actually meant for good things. Therefore, to dispel these myths about black cats, National Black Cat Appreciation Day was created to be celebrated annually on August 17th.
National Feral Cat Day
Today, pop culture loves black cats. There’s the sarcastic Tucker Binks in Hocus Pocus and Salem in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and we can’t forget the black cat in the cartoon classic, Luna in Sailor Moon. Black cats are considered faithful companions and this is what has also been seen in many cultures throughout history.
So who is to blame for spinning a negative black cat? Myth! But mainly because in the Middle Ages, people (mainly the Catholic Church) saw witches as black cats, and the damage was done. Since then, black cats have been seen as evil for years and years.
But not everyone sees black cats this way. In fact, black cats have actually welcomed many people. For some, a visit from a black cat means good luck, for others, prosperity or love. Hey, some cultures even worship black cats. Basically, there is no need to be afraid. On this day, we celebrate our cuddly friends, regardless of their coat color.
