A wall of books can bring a home to life and add color and texture to a space while expressing your personality. Bookshelves should be arranged in a functional way – so that you can easily find another book, of course – and in a pleasant way.
Whether it’s a living room library or a playroom, a bookshelf is the focal point. If you find that you have more than enough reading material, consider donating. Otherwise, here are some different methods used by independent bookstore owners and professional home organizers.

Charlotte Berlin, professional organizer and founder of Writing Made Easy by Charlotte, supports the tried-and-true method of organizing books by color and length. “In my style, books are grouped by color, shades within color groups, and height,” Berlin says.
Berlin is based on the color of the spine of the book, not the color of the cover. “Once my color groups were finished, I placed the books on the shelves in rainbow order, alternating between vertical and horizontal pieces.” This orderly and organized method creates a beautiful visual patchwork and makes it easy to find and return the book.
How To Organize A Small Reach In Closet For Multi Purpose Storage
This method is popular among Berlin customers, especially with children. For the playroom, for example, Berlin separates books by age group (eg, board books, picture books, and chapter books) and color, then uses toys or art as books. In an adult bedroom or library, decorative pieces make great bookcases.
Finally, books are the finishing touches to add style to a room. “If you can find books that are within a color palette and have an interesting story line, I think that’s a win,” Berlin says.
Quick tip: Bookshelves can also be used to display photo frames and decorative items that might otherwise be out of place, Berlin says. “Arranging your books horizontally and vertically increases balance and maximizes space,” he says. “You can use a horizontal tier of books to display a decorative piece.”
Effortless Ways To Style Bookshelf Decor
“I like my schedule to be friendly, but that’s just me,” says Nina Barrett of Booksends & Beginnings in Evanston, Illinois. He separates fiction from non-fiction, and groups his books into separate categories. “Books on the same subject should be kept together and organized so that you can find them easily when you are in a different situation.”
For example, Barrett has a large collection of cookbooks and keeps all the cookbooks together. In the cooking section, books are a small part. “When you’re in the mood for pie, you want to get your hands on all the pie books at once,” he says.
Another example: Barrett has several bookcases devoted to books from Bronze Age Europe, and in them, all the books from Crete are separated from the books from Troy.
The Best Ways To Store Books In Your Bedroom
“Book shelves are a sign of the character and knowledge of their owners,” he says. “There’s no need to imitate the Library of Congress because nobody out there wants to find anything there. Treat yourself like the curator of your own museum.”

Danny Kane, owner of Raven Book Store in Lawrence, Kansas, is the first to admit that his style is all over the place, but that’s part of the appeal. “I sort by genre, a little bit, but within each genre are favorites, classics, and things I haven’t read yet,” says Cain.

Kane believes the more sit-ins Booker feels, the better. “If a book is well organized, it’s always messy, and there’s nothing cheesy or cluttered about it, it just feels wrong,” she says. “The home library is a living, organic part of the home and it should look that way.”
Caine’s unique organizational method allows for growth and change. “There’s no clear definition of what ends up on your favorites shelf, so it can change and change as I change and change as a reader.” Ken’s bookshelves at home are full, so he abandons the alphabetical order method, which forces him to frequently change things on already full bookshelves.
There are no hard and fast rules for organizing home bookshelves. Some people like to organize by color, while others may organize their books alphabetically or vertically.
How To Organize A Bookshelf
If your bookshelves are purely decorative, quick access to individual books may not be a priority. Good readers want a clear organizational structure that makes sense to them and allows them to easily find the right books.

A Better Way To Organize And Style Your Bookshelves
Alphabet: There are many different options for this. You can alphabetize your reading by author or subject. If you have a large collection, sorting by author’s last name will help make it easier to find what you’re looking for. It will be like having your own mini library (with your friends!) right in your home.
By Genre: If you are a reader of different genres across the board then this section is for you. Sort articles into categories and easily find the perfect read for your mood, whether it’s a page-turning puzzle or a how-to on something that interests you.
Fiction vs. Nonfiction: This method is especially easy for smaller collections. Start by collecting your storybooks together, and then the rest can sit in a separate section for easy access.
Bookshelf Ideas To Stand Out In Any Home
Each shelf in this bookshelf is filled with a collection of matching colored books. Contemporary trinkets serve as bookends. Decorations bring more color and character to a great display.
In Color: For the perfect Pinterest shelf, organizing readings in color is the way to go. This style is a popular way to make a statement with your books as well as double as decoration. Try matching a rainbow pattern for a colorful display or group warm and cool tones for an eye-catching effect. The only downside to this section is that, unless you know the color of the book’s spine, it can be a bit difficult to choose your next option or enter another title.
Read v. Unread: Instead of putting away new titles until you’ve had a chance to read them, create a shelf or two for this purpose. If you ever get the urge to start reading something new, you know where to go.
