But sometimes, listed items can be fake. Now, Charlotte County law enforcement is now warning not only about scammers, but about resorting to violence as well.
“It’s the Wild Wild West, anyone can publish anything,” said Tom Bartholomew, president and CEO of TheBetter Business Bureau.
“Online shopping is the number one fraud in the country right now and has been for the last three years, really since the pandemic started,” he said. “People’s buying patterns have changed and that only opens the door for fraudsters to take advantage of us.”

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a recent Facebook Marketplace transaction led to a shooting that seriously injured one person at a shopping center in Steele Creek on Oct. 4. But during the meeting, he took out his gun. The alleged buyer tried to run away, but the suspect shot him in the stomach.
Police agencies continue to offer the same warnings about how fraudsters can take money and run off without delivering the goods. The Kannapolis Police Department recently shared an alert with the public that a Facebook user received payment for a children’s playhouse but never delivered the product.
“Meet a police station, which quickly throws out a potential thief or fraud,” he said.

Other tips: Buy locally, don’t pay in advance, and make sure you have the product on hand before paying. If you’re still being scammed, contact Facebook so the social network can remove the post. My first experience with Facebook Marketplace came in September when, after my great urge to purge, my boyfriend let me list his FunkoPOPs that he was going to throw away. Of the 3 I listed, I received some requests that never went anywhere on one of the items and was able to sell the other for $15 just a few days after taking it in. It was so exciting, so I knew I would eventually come back to list more items… and I did!
In November, as part of my challenge to increase my income, I went around the house looking for things to sell. I set a small goal to list only 5 items to start and made a total of $140 selling my Apple Watch series 3 and a bag from Target that I never used.
Recently, I made $21 selling a pair of boots (which I registered in November), another bag, and jewelry. These sales won’t pay off the mortgage, but it’s nice to get rid of something I no longer need and get some extra money to pay off my debt in the process.

However, like anything involving people, patience is essential, and success on platforms like Facebook Marketplace can be elusive.
Here are some things I’ve learned that will help you close the deal and turn your fat into coins:
Used Items It is important to include as much information as possible about the item being listed. Information such as when and where the product was purchased, price paid or value, manufacturer or brand name and measurements where applicable may be useful to the customer. For new items, state whether the items still have tags or have never been opened, and for older/used items, be sure to state whether there are any defects or areas of wear.

Every photo tells a story, and you want your product photos to tell the best story. The light you take pictures with matters. Whenever possible, photograph your items in natural light. However, if you are taking photos at night, use flash and/or filters on your phone camera. Also, take pictures of your item(s) from different angles, including the soles of your shoes and even inside bags or purses. As with descriptions, being transparent and taking photos of your item’s packaging, tags, stains and any areas of wear can go a long way for buyers.
As long as you want to sell something, someone wants to buy it, so use that to your advantage. Set and maintain guidelines for communication, trades, whether the item is available for shipping, your preferred payment method, and how long you are willing to sell the item. If you want to meet the buyer in person, try to arrange the sale in the area where you plan to be or leave work to save time and gas.
Unless you’re friends with a potential buyer, you won’t see much detail about them. However, that does not mean that you cannot get enough information where you feel comfortable going forward with the contract. Where possible, look up their profile, paying particular attention to profile pictures, any information about their whereabouts, where they work, and even family connections. I also did a Google search to get over the name/pictures I found on Facebook because I’d be lying if I said I’d never care if it was a real person on the other end of the chat.
I Hate Facebook Marketplace
It should go without saying, but your safety comes first. After you’ve done everything you can to verify that the profile is legitimate, only meet in public places you’re familiar with and at times of day you’re most comfortable with. You can also bring a friend if you feel safe that you are not alone. Whatever it is, trust your heart. If you don’t feel like it, don’t do it.
Finally, do your best to be patient. There are thousands of listings on Facebook Marketplace, so it may take some time to find the right buyer for your listing.

Selling through a smartphone app can save you time by allowing you to take a photo of your item and attach it to your listing without having to save and upload photos.
When you do business through Facebook Marketplace, you are no more (or less) likely to run into shady characters than you are in the real world, or when you buy and sell things on services like eBay and Craigslist. Be alert and walk away if something doesn’t feel right.
