I have a project for all you DIY-ers out there: a Christmas stocking holder. It goes great with our Santa Magic key, which works great if you don’t have a fireplace. How else will Santa fit in? Where will he leave all his good things?
These hangers not only solve the problem of where Santa puts his little things when he comes down the chimney (or uses his key), but they also work as great Christmas wall decorations. They’re perfect for a farmhouse or rustic look, but you can dress them up with any holiday theme.
These stock holders can be completed in five easy steps. You will paint a plaque, cut paper and fold it down, add chalkboard squares, accent with bows and add hooks.

Once done, this can be displayed anywhere in your Christmas home! You can attach sawtooth hangers to the back and attach these holders to picture hooks. Or you can add to the command line – just make sure the weight is right to support the stuff you’re going to put in.
Before you begin, cut your scrapbook paper to fit the top of the plaque. If necessary, you can make a template (rub) with tissue paper and a pencil. It helps if you use a decorated plaque. I just cut it with a craft knife and a ruler as it was rectangular.
Use acrylic art paint to paint the edge of your plaque, and the back as well if you’d like. Let the paint run up if there are gaps in the paper. Allow and apply a second coat; Then let it dry completely.

For this project I used Satin, but you can use any Mod Podge formula you like. Gloss or matte works too, as well as gloss if you’re looking to “juzz” things up a bit.
Apply a medium layer of Mod Podge over the plaque. Work quickly, as Mod Podge tends to dry quickly. If you see a dry spot before applying the paper, apply more Mod Podge underneath. It is better to use too much than not enough.
Smooth it out with your fingers, and use a brayer if you have one. I love my decoupage tools! If any Mod Podge comes off the side, just wipe it off with your paint brush (it’s fine). Let it dry for 15 – 20 minutes.

Paint chalkboard paint on Mod Podged scrapbook paper. The reason I switched to foam brushes? I find that chalkboard paint goes on evenly and without streaks. It’s just a preference; it is not necessary.
Let the paint dry and see if you need two coats. The coat must be completely dry before applying another coat. When the paint is completely dry, remove the tape.
If you have trouble removing the tape (because it tends to expose the paint), use a craft knife to score.

Cut the plywood squares. Cut a 10″ and a 16″ square from the ¾” plywood. Next, cut a 4 ½’ square from the ½” plywood.
If you are using a 4 x 4” post, cut it to the length you want as a stationary stock holder.
Unique Ways To Hang Christmas Stockings
If you are using new posts like me, cut the top ball with a saw. Next drill a 5/8″ hole in the post that goes through the top. This is easiest if you press the new post in like I did on my workbench.
Set the miter saw to a 45 angle and cut the top platform frame. My piece of plywood was 4 1/2 inches, so from the inside corner measurement I was 4 ½” long.
Turn and drill the 4 sink test holes in the center to attach the base to the new post. Attach the base with 2 1/2″ screws.

Use wood glue and attach the frame to the edge of the upper platform. When placing the trim place it on a flat surface so that the trim is flat and ¼”. This will hold your lantern in place.
Finally, you will slide the dowel into the 5/8″ hole and center it. This will hang from the top Christmas stocking stuffers.
I used my Homeright Super Finish Max paint sprayer and a blue spray tip for this project. Because the paint was thick like pudding, I thinned it down a little with water until it was the consistency of chocolate milk.

Tip: I always have an extra HomeRight bowl full of water so I can run fresh water when I’m done. This makes cleaning even easier.
Drawing a stationary stock holder was easy. I used my Homerite Paint Shelter in the center which protected my stock holder while I painted and didn’t have to worry about cleaning.
