I wanted to make this card in bright colors and I wanted it to be a card that could be given to anyone. The hardest part was finding the design I wanted to draw. I did this with some watercolors, a Cricut machine, and an Archival Ink marker in the marker slot of my machine. It was pretty easy, so keep reading to find out how I did it!
Easy Diy Greeting Cards
Whenever you’re creating a card like this water balloon card, start by choosing an image that you want to be the focal point of the card. I chose a background filled with balloons because it looked festive and I thought I could do a lot with it. This design came from the Cricut Design Site but you can also use a stamped image.

I removed the normal case that will hold the Cricut marker in slot A of my Cricut Explore Air 2. I then used an archival Micron marker to trace the image with my Cricut. To see the full process of using non-Cricut markers with the Explore Air 2, check out this post. If you are going to stamp your image instead, avoid water based inks. I recommend Archival Ink. It seemed to work best for me.
Once your image is drawn or printed on watercolor or mixed paper, place it on a flat surface. I like painter’s tape because I can still remove it later without too much damage. When you tap it, make sure it is well attached and there are no holes on it.

Then start painting your design. I give you 100% permission to use your artistic freedom at this point. Before you add the construction paint, you can add water to the paper and this will create a wet on wet effect. Alternatively, you can darken the color on one edge of the balloons to make it look like shadows are falling on the balloons. I decided to use the Sakura Koi Watercolor Field 48 Sketch Set in the following colors; #032, #024, #076, #145, #052, #114. I really like how mine turned out, but if you want more detail from me, that’s fine! It’s your choice.
Tip: Take two cups of water when working with watercolors. One for clean water and one for dirty water. Step 4
When you are done painting and the paper is completely dry, you can remove the tape. If your paper is a little wrinkled or needs straightening, place a heavy book on top of it and leave it for a few days. The weight of the book will help it.

When you’re ready to attach the design to your card base, cut a sheet of cardstock to (5.5′ x 8.5′). I used a neon green paper for the base. Place your watercolor design on the cardboard. Use a tip that will hold until the watercolor design tries to slide off the card base. I recommend using scor-trak. When working with watercolors, I find that regular squares do not form properly.
Then design the banner to your liking. I used my Cricut machine to create the sentiment. I chose the neon blue card because it matched the tone of all the other bright colors. I also used some 3D tape
