Car Gas Tanks – Petrol and diesel vehicles are similar. Both use internal combustion engines. A petrol car typically uses a spark-ignition internal combustion engine, rather than the compression ignition systems used in diesel vehicles. In a spark ignition system, fuel is injected into the combustion chamber and combined with air. The air/fuel mixture is ignited by a spark from the spark plug. While gasoline is the most common transportation fuel, there are alternative fuel options that use similar engine components and systems. Learn more about alternative fuel options.

Electronic Control Module (ECM): The ECM controls the fuel mixture, ignition timing and exhaust system; supervises vehicle operation; protects the engine from abuse; and identifies and fixes problems.

Exhaust System: The exhaust system routes exhaust gases from the engine through the tailpipe. A three-way catalytic converter is designed to reduce engine exhaust emissions within the exhaust system.

How To Clean Your Fuel Tank

Refueling: A nozzle from a fuel dispenser connects to the container in the vehicle to fill the tank.

Fuel line: A metal tube or hose (or some combination thereof) carries fuel from the tank to the engine’s fuel injection system.

Fuel pump – a pump that transfers fuel from the tank to the engine’s fuel injection system through the fuel line.

Internal Combustion Engine (Spark Ignition): In this configuration, fuel is injected into the intake manifold or combustion chamber, where it is combined with air and the air/fuel mixture is ignited by a spark from a spark plug. A single fuel line runs from the tank, under the floor of the car, to a mechanical pump on the engine. The pump supplies fuel to the carburetor.

The fuel delivery system is usually reliable, and any problems that occur can usually be traced to the pump, fuel filter, or tank. However, sometimes the problem lies with the fuel line between the tank and the engine.

Pipes can suffer from two main defects: leaks or blockages. Probably the first indication you’ll get of a leak is the smell of petrol wafting through the car – don’t be long in finding the problem, as petrol fumes can easily ignite.

A clogged pipe is usually very noticeable – the car stalls or suffers from a fuel shortage. Fortunately this is rare now that fuel filters are installed to remove dirt.

The fuel line is usually made of rigid metal tubing, with rubber or plastic hoses running from the hoses to the tank and fuel pump, and from the pump to the carburetor. The flexibility of the tubes allows for some movement between these different components. In some cars, the pipes are made of reinforced plastic and not metal.

There are two common types of fuel line connections. One is a hose connection using a tributary clip. The other is a metal to metal connection. The metal tube has a cone

A malfunction of the pipes and tubes, or their connections, is a potential fire hazard, so the system should be checked annually.

Disconnect the battery as a safety measure against possible sparks. Back up the car and support it on jack stands. Carefully inspect the tubing throughout. Look carefully at the seams, check if there are any dark spots that indicate a leak. Use a wrench to check that all the hose connections are tight.

Also check any metal pipes for rust – use a wire brush to remove surface rust on the pipes. If the hose is badly burned underneath, it needs to be replaced.

Also check the hose and connections. Fold and twist them, looking for any cracks. If the hose has hardened from age or is soft from oil contamination, it should be replaced. Hoses use different types of safety clips; Make sure they are tight and not frayed.

Check the path of the pipes, they must not pass too close to hot parts of the engine such as the exhaust pipe or the manifold. Check that the hose is secured with its clamps and is not abrading anything.

If you find a badly damaged hose or pipe, it will need to be replaced. Before starting work, drain the fuel from the tank into a suitable container and store it in a safe place.

Release the clip while holding one end of the tube. There may be a jubilee type clip (like here) or a metal clip. If using a metal clip, always replace it with a Jubilee clip.

Pull the hose from the brake (here on the carburettor). If it’s stuck, test it by gently turning it from side to side. Don’t try to pull it – you could move the diff.

Go to the other end of the tube and release the clip that holds it. Here it is connected to a disposable plastic fuel filter. Again, gently tug on the tube to free it.

The filter has a plastic hub, so when fitting the hose be very careful not to over tighten the clamp. If you tighten too much, a diff will be squashed.

What To Do If You Get Water In Your Car’s Gas Tank

Loosen the joints on both ends of the rigid pipe. Remove or fold back the safety clips from the hose to release the hose from the floor.

Pull the hose out of the car. Remember that the hoses are often quite long and there may still be a significant amount of fuel left in them.

Many metal pipes have an olive fitting (see sidebar, opposite page). The olive tree works by sitting between two

Ed, expansion, end of tube. The olive is designed to fit any cone. When the tubes are squeezed together, the olive compresses and seals the cones. The olives must be replaced if leaks are found and always when fitting a new tube.

Loosen the pipe joint with two wrenches (above) and loosen them completely. You will see the olive in one of the flared tubes. Pull it out with your hand (up). Reassemble the new one in the reverse order of disassembly, but be careful not to overtighten the joint which could damage the olive or the connecting threads.

The ends of the hoses are usually secured with small Jubilee clips. Loosen them with a screwdriver and slide them along the tube. If the hoses have spring clips, grab them with pliers to spread them out and remove them. Replace all spring clips with new Yuval ones.

Twist and pull the tube to release it. If the tube refuses to budge, pour hot water over it to expand it. Never use an open flame to heat the tube. If the pipe still won’t move, your last resort is to cut it with a pair of side cutters (wide-nose pliers with a cutting edge) or a saw.

When buying the new hose, make sure it has the same inside diameter as the old one. Slide the tube into place so that it overlaps the tube or is approximately (25mm) short. Position the clips slightly inward from the ends of the new hose and tighten them. Do not overtighten them.

To replace a stiff hose, first empty the fuel tank or, if draining is difficult, disconnect the fuel hose from the tank and quickly plug the open end.

Starting at the rear of the car, loosen the nuts or clips that secure the hose to the fuel tank and the car’s floor or frame. Latches loosen, fold back, or pop out. Disconnect the hose at the front and then remove from the car.

New parts are usually supplied by the dealer ready for the correct fit. If the pipe connections are socket connections, they must be renewed at the same time. Install the new hose loosely in place. Tighten the connections at each end and make the safety clips, again making sure the new hose can’t rub against other components and is positioned away from hot engine and exhaust parts.

A small section of metal pipe can be repaired by cutting off the damaged section and inserting a small piece of hose in its place. First, carefully cut the section with a saw. Be sure to clean the ends of the hose of any tangles caused by the cut. Use a piece of hose of the correct inside diameter to fit the hose and clip it in place.

This repair should only be done if the damaged hose is less than 6 inches (15 cm) long, otherwise there is a risk of the hose falling out and becoming vulnerable to damage.

If you discover a leaky pipe on a road trip, you can make some emergency repairs just to get back to your home or garage.

If a pipe is leaking, you can cut it at the leak and fit a piece of rigid pipe through it. Secure the hose by tying a thin string such as garden twine around it.

You can do a similar pipe repair, this time by placing a piece of pipe over the pipe and securing it in the same way as above.
