To say I’m delighted would be an understatement when Scottish wedding planner Sarah from Weddings by Sara Jane contacted me to ask if I could photograph the wedding of Alicia and James who had traveled across the Atlantic from North America to Scotland, at Dunotar Castle last year. . Just over two hours’ drive from Scotland’s largest city, GlasgowandEdinburg and just thirty minutes from Scotland’s third largest, thriving and cosmopolitan Aberdeen, Dunnottar’s wild and seemingly remote Scottish mountain location is highly accessible and easy to travel to.
I met up with the lovely James and Alicia to begin our wedding photography coverage of the elopement on a clifftop next to the castle, a traditional Scottish bagpiper accompanying Alicia’s approach to the vow exchange arrangement where James was waiting. A beautiful traditional Scottish handfasting ritual completes the vows while a local secretary performs the romantic ceremony. Once Alicia and James were officially engaged, we then headed to the castle itself, taking advantage of the ancient walls for wedding photography, taking some quiet time to look out over the vast North Sea beyond the castle walls.
To end the wedding day, we then returned to Alicia and James’ hotel, the Banochry Lodgeon on the banks of the River Dee. With its lush surroundings, I took my last photo, then left Alicia and James to enjoy the rest of their wedding day together.
