More than just the basics of covering your rental car, the right bedding can help tie all the other details together to create a cohesive and engaging experience for your guests. But don’t take it from us; we’ve reached out to some of the top linen companies to share why linens are so important and how to use them to make your wedding shine.

“If you’re thinking about designing a wedding, what’s the most important area you should focus on?” asks Sarah Granger-Toomey of La Tavola Fine Linen. The results? “The table, of course! Also, the table is where your guests will spend the most time at any given time, so choosing the right linen is very important.” Think about it: You have an enthusiastic dinner audience, so this is your chance to make a statement.
“With so many moving parts at a wedding, every detail becomes a great opportunity to express your personality as a couple throughout the evening,” says Zaira Vallejo of Nüage Designs. Guests will be talking about it long after the evening is over.” Rebecca O’Dea of BBJ Linen adds: “Napkins, tablecloths and runners are accessories that can show off your creativity. When working with a rental company, find out what bedding you need before you start choosing. Check the size and number of tables, the number of guests you will have and whether you need accent linens for the cocktail table or cake table.

“Start with a color scheme or inspiration board and decide what colors you want to see in the room,” says O’Dea. “And think about how you want the room to feel, because the right bedding can go a long way toward helping that.” Vallejo adds, “Linen can set the mood for your event by transforming a room. Think of linen as a fabric for the rest of your decor.
Although the wedding will be more relaxed, there are a few details that make the day special. “We always encourage floor-length bedding to give the space a clean, finished look,” says O’Dea. And don’t forget the napkins! “An easy way to liven up your look is to up your napkin selection, whether it’s something with a contrasting pattern or a patterned fabric.”
Thinking of a more sophisticated and soft palette? Don’t limit yourself to white linens and napkins. “A colorful runner or doilie can add a splash of contrast to help brighten up a room,” says O’Dea. It can be just a blue napkin on an ivory tablecloth or a more contrasting dark blue.

“We encourage couples to bring in two or three different styles, complementing each other, to really add dimension to your design,” says Vallejo. “We love to incorporate colors—from neutrals to deep jewel tones—but also recommend incorporating different textural elements like sequins, velvet, and tulle to give your guests an impression.”
Finding the right fabric isn’t difficult if you keep the rest of the wedding in mind. Granger-Toomey suggests, “Did you use handmade paper for your invitations? Look for similar fabrics. If you’re wearing a lace wedding dress, pair it with lace underwear to replicate the look.”
Inspiration goes both ways, and the choice of underwear can play a big role in creating a flawless look. “We often get sample requests from bakers and cake makers so they can incorporate colors and patterns into their work,” says Vallejo. “It’s details like these that create a truly immersive guest experience.”

As with fashion, the combination of patterns and linens can enhance the look of your wedding. “Think three: dominant, submissive and neutral,” says Granger-Toomey. “Start with a bold (dominant) look to define your palette. Then select a smaller (subdominant) pattern of the same color. Finally, pull firmly into the neutral position to relax. The same goes for colored bedding. O’Dea adds, “Combining two different colors can add depth and dimension to a room.”
Make every part of your wedding (ceremony, cocktail hour and reception) a special occasion with the colors and fabrics you choose. “Start with a more neutral palette for your party, then start bringing in bright colors and vibrant patterns as you move into cocktail hour and the reception,” advises Vallejo.
Choose a palette to bring everything together, but play with the mixed patterns you just worked on to add visual interest.

You don’t have to fill the entire room with pattern or texture, but careful use can highlight these important elements. “Make the head table, cake table, and escort table stand out with color, pattern, or other decor,” says O’Dea. “These tables add a wow factor that lets guests know they’re important. There are lots of things to come up with – bathtubs, tubs and drinking glasses to name a few. However, there is one particular detail that can make or break the beauty of your entire table: your fabric. Sticking with classic tablecloths, runners and doilies would be fine—there’s something to be said for an all-shiny, all-white show—we’re going for tablecloths you can’t see.
