New Slang Words 2020 – Google trends can tell us a lot about language – it is often used to analyze regional heritage or trending topics. For this project, I wanted to see if I could use Google Trends to determine trending slang words throughout the year.
The first point is making sure our list isn’t filled with established words like “wake,” or “choose”—every word on our final list first rose to prominence in 2020.

The 10 Most Common Chilean Slang Words: Lesson 1 In
As I said at the top, I used Google Trends to highlight the top 10 list. The complete code for this project can be seen here.
I started by building a dataset of related queries from the past year for the following terms: “dictionary”, “define”, “definition” and “city dictionary”. I used pytrends, a Python package for the Google trends API, to collect this data.
The related_queries() command returns a dictionary of pandas dataframes of related queries for each term in our keyword list. The output might look like this:

As you can see, the call returns two dictionaries – one named ‘rising’ and another named ‘top’.
After combining the data frames for each keyword and filtering out duplicate terms, the resulting data set contained 95 possible 2020 slang words.
I then decided to measure the search interest for each of these terms to determine the top 10. This was a very simple process as Google trends allows you to pass in multiple terms to compare.

The picture above shows 2 graphs for each word – the interest over time in 2020, and the interest over time since 2004. The first graph shows what part of the year the word was ‘ move, and the second graph proves that all these words were there. “new” in 2020.
Except… is that true? Words like epidemic, asymptomatic have certainly been around for a long time. Why would they appear on this list?

New Slang Words You’ll Be Hearing More Of In 2020
Several of the words on the 2020 list were somehow related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Let’s review the list again:
The only real slang words on this list are simp, BIPOC, wfh and WASP mom. Even wfh has been inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, and BIPOC may be popular in response to Black Lives Matter protests and calls for racial justice.
2020 was an unconventional year, and this list proves it. These are not words that came up in certain communities and gradually became popular – they are words that we had to understand and adapt when the circumstances of our daily lives suddenly changed, very much.
Bay Area Slang Redux
I can only say that it is fitting that “coronavirus” is at the top of this list, which is identified in many ways with the pandemic. In fact, “coronavirus” is a word that few people used before 2020 and that came to dominate almost every aspect of daily conversation throughout the year.
