The result after more than ten hours of work in cold weather and under the unrelenting sun was a wonderful way to walk along a football field.
“I hope it will make people more aware of snow and the environment and its beauty and how much we need snow,” said Beck after painting. “And I think it is a beautiful and unique piece of art.”
Beck finished his day with more than five of his volunteers and thanked the people gathered on a nearby hill to watch his progress.

But it didn’t always work out. It is not clear how many workers will appear. And if bad weather rolls in, the intricate art can quickly break.
“It’s very frustrating when you hit for hours and hours and hours and the wind blows before you finish,” he said.
Beck began carving ice blocks in 2004 outside his winter home in the French mountain resort of Les Arcs when he climbed a five-pointed star over 300 meters “for fun.” He didn’t realize how beautiful it was until he went skiing the next day and saw it at the top.

“The snow sculpture, for me, was a very cool idea, it wasn’t something that anyone else had done as I told them, and it really surprised me,” he said.
Beck completed approximately 330 snow paintings and 120 sand paintings, and set himself the goal of painting 1,000,000 by the time he was 80. His paintings were exhibited around the world, he published a book, and attracted a devoted fan base.
Carolyn Tiller, who has been following Beck’s career for three or four years, watched him arrive at the store and offered him and his staff cookies and cocoa spreads.

The 62-year-old retiree said Beck’s art reminded her of her childhood playing with the Spirograph, an old toy that made simple geometric designs.
“I also really appreciate someone who can do something step by step,” said Tiller, who lives across the street from the shop. “They say great journeys start with one step, and this is a great example.”

For the past 10 years, British artist Simon Beck has been painting snow-capped lakes and mountains and large geometric mountains, often based on abstract designs, using his foot in the process.
Beck’s ski design has attracted people and opportunities beyond the ski resort of Les Arcs in France where it originated. This year alone, he has given TED talks in Austria and Cyprus, collaborated with New Zealand clothing line Icebreaker on a clothing line, and seen his international Facebook following grow to 280,000,000. Now he adds Snow Art, a book of over 200 people who took photographs of his work, listing his achievements.

Beck’s journey into art was unusual. He was working as a cartographer when he first removed snow, and before that he graduated from Oxford as an engineer. He made his first ice sculpture, a star on the lake near his home in Les Arcs, to float after a day of skiing in 2004.
“When I first drew it, I had no idea how well it would turn out,” he said. “It’s unusual and unique. Nobody else is doing anything like it.”
But it wasn’t until five years ago, when he realized that it was his love of travel that led to his feet, that he began to take his drawings seriously.

“I realized that it’s better to do something simple than a vision, and to do something painless,” he said. Snowboarding has gone from a casual hobby to a form of winter sport.
One hundred and fifty years later, many things have changed. Where he was once limited to scouting and photographing his activities from the mountains and ski lifts, he now has the ability to work outside the plane if he wishes; instead of wearing shoes, he now wears snow. His work has gone from being a solo success to being an online sensation.
However, his technique remained the same. Beck still has about 30 miles to cover a distance as big as six football fields, counting every step as he would when traveling, with nothing but a compass and a line map. An individual photo can take up to 12 hours to complete.
Target Field Becomes Canvas For Snow Artist
But now his art is down to a science. Beck knows the best places (frozen lakes), the best time to shoot (before the figure goes into shadow at the end of the day), and the best weather (sun, at least a foot of snow). Now he can turn his attention to fine art and push himself professionally.
Earlier this year, Beck spent time in New Zealand and Somerset Beach in the UK making sand sculptures, painting sculptures on the beach washed up by the waves. Fans suggested he should try working in the mud or the desert, or try mowing the lawn, but he really wants to try growing crops. He also wants to start exploring remote lakes in towns around the Alps, such as Zermatt, Switzerland.
“And there are other places I would like to (try) because of the location, like the Central Park in New York. I want to make a painting there, or on the grounds of the White House, Buckingham Gardens, or a park.” in London”. “If you’ve ever needed it to be good, you’d better go do something like that, and have famous buildings in the background.”
