What I like about bar brands is that you look at the bar and you can see what you’re eating. They are absolutely delicious and made with real fruits, nuts, seeds and grains. No unprocessed ingredients and no gluten, no dairy, no GMOs. I use Kindness bars as a quick snack, dessert or treat. Right now I’m in love with Chocolate Dark Almond Mint, which tastes pretty close to Girl Scout Thin Mint. Not that I remember what one tastes like, ha ha. This bar contains 200 calories and 5g of protein.
I found these in the checkout aisle at Aldi. My favorite is the Blueberry & Hemp Seeds which have 110 calories and 3g of protein. The bars are slightly chewy, sweet and floral. It reminds me of a fruit roll up for adults.
I found a Rawxies Mint Chocolate Chip bar at my local health food store. These are vegan, gluten free and made with “real” ingredients like GF oats, seeds, nuts, coconut and dates. But, best of all, each “cookie” is in the shape of a heart! I wish I had thought of these things because I often cut homemade proteins into beautiful shapes. The mint chocolate bars have 130 calories and 4 g of protein.

It’s no secret that I love my Top Quizzes. White Chocolate Raspberry is my favorite followed by S’Mores and Double Chocolate Chunk. Most bars are about 200 calories and 21 grams of protein. I wasn’t sure if Epic Bars should be classified as a protein bar, or a meal. They are 100% animal based paleo grass fed protein. I love the Turkish Almond Cranberry Bar with 14 g. protein and only 150 calories. (This is low in calories for a meal replacement so I can add it to a shake mix, fruit, nuts or homemade trail mix.)
I discovered these bars at a local Terra Health Food store. I tried the Banana Walnut Core Meal Bar and was pleasantly surprised to find it soft and moist; slightly sweet with a hint of banana. It’s almost like an oatmeal cookie, with gluten-free oats, raw nuts, bananas, raisins, flaxseeds, and vanilla beans. Definitely a meal replacement at 350 calories and 11g of protein. The cool thing is that these can be damaged. It will last 1 week in transit, 2 months refrigerated, and 9 months frozen. These bars are very satisfying and filling, so they are a great choice for air travel.

I tried the Caramel Paleo Protein Bar. This has 20 g of protein (from the egg white) and 180 calories. I’ll be honest, I’m not a big fan. The bar is heavy and has a slight caramel taste, but it was good. I won’t buy these again but I understand that we all have different tastes and you may.
One of my friends suggested I include Balance Bars in this article and she likes the peanut butter variety (200 calories and 15g protein). Balance bars are dense and sweet – almost like a healthy candy bar!
Whipping up a protein shake on a plane takes a little more effort than opening a protein bar, but it’s easy to do if you enjoy drinking shakes. Remember the water you bought at the airport? (Or fill your water bottle?) Just mix in a shaker cup with your protein powder and voila! The food is done.

Okay, so I don’t always carry vegetables on a plane, but it IS an option. Great choices would be baby carrots, bell peppers and celery. You can find travel packets of hummus that will make a great dip or spread. (Make sure to put the hummus packets in your quart size ziploc bag when you go through security.)

For the next trip I choose Vermont Meat Sticks. I love the BBQ beef and the Uncured Turkey Pepperoni (although only one lasted long enough to photograph!) These meatballs are tender, gluten-free and made with meat raised without antibiotics.
