Simon Beck Snow Artist Biography – If someone were to find one of these drawings in the middle of farmland in Iowa, it would be common to attribute such amazing art to some kind of extraterrestrial being. However, a snow artist named Simon Beck, who was born in London in the 1950s, is responsible for hundreds, if not thousands, of intricate designs made from snow.
According to 303 magazine, Beck originally earned an engineering degree from Oxford, which prepared him to pursue a career as a cartographer. It wasn’t until much later in life, when Simon began spending winters in Les Arcs, France, that he put his skill as a landscape or snow artist to use.

After talking to Simon on the ‘intraweb’ a few weeks ago, he told me about his art. Simon has always trained for a hobby called competitive orienteering. He talked about how his art and training could go hand in hand, saying “2009. I made the decision to take this seriously and make it my main form of winter exercise (replacing training with competitive training) and drawing in the snow as a priority. skiing when the conditions were good.”

Lucky Coloradans were able to check out Beck’s work in the desolate snowfields outside of Silverthorne, CO between January 3rd and 16th when he visited and helped usher in the new year with some of his designs! 303 Magazine also reported that they will be helping to start local First Friday events there!
Simon made his first work on snow at Club Med Lake, outside Ark, around 2000. I asked Simon what inspired him to start making such masterful art.
“It happened more or less by accident.” I made some drawings for fun, but with no digital camera, no internet access, it wasn’t long before I realized that no one else was doing anything like it, and apparently it had never been done before.” -Simon Beck

As I scratched the surface a little deeper, I wanted to know why Simon continues to work tirelessly to create breathtaking art that in most winter climates can be swept away or covered up in a matter of hours. Simon explained to me that most of the work he does is just for exercise and self-indulgence. He is occasionally hired by companies who want him to design their logo for advertising. Most of all, Simon seems to enjoy using his background as a cartographer to get out and play in the desert. He just wasn’t cut out to work in an office like many of us.
Simon noted that he has photos of almost all of his completed drawings and has the rights to some of his favorites, which can only be seen in his book Snow Art. What a great conversation starter for any outdoor enthusiast or artist’s coffee table!
So how does he do it? Not that he can stand on the sidelines and look at the bigger picture while he works. In our conversation, Simon explained that he puts some of his experience into making one of these drawings. He often sketches plans and uses a magnetic compass, a little math and his knowledge of geometry to help him.

“The first stage is accurate measurement, I use a magnetic compass and determining the distance by counting steps.” This is the most challenging part, but if you get this process right first, it will gradually become easier as the drawing progresses.” – Simon Beck
Some of Simon’s drawings require several sessions. He has to be very careful to have the right time window when working on such complex pieces. In 2013, Beck made a drawing on a reservoir in Ark that he reported doing in 4 sessions of 8 hours each.
Simon also explained to me that when he’s not making snow art, he enjoys skiing and orienteering competitions for fun.

When there is no snow, Beck spends a lot of time at the beach. There he can spend hours training in the summer by walking or running on the sand. Also, you guessed it; Simon does about 20 drawings a year on the beach.

Simon is the first and most famous ‘snow artist’. Educated at Oxford, he quickly abandoned his early career as an engineer to become a cartographer.
Simon Beck’s Snow Art: Geometric Canvas Created By Walking Across Snow Covered Fields
His obsession with instruction, his passion for snow and his love of nature and physical activity led him to draw a star on the frozen lake in front of his house after a day of skiing in December 2004. The next day he looked from a nearby cable car and was amazed at the results. After the next snowfall he decided to take on a more complicated design and Snow Art was born!
He drew a lot in his childhood. Over time, his geometric shapes, inspired mainly by Koch’s snowflake, became more and more complex. His large drawings span from 1 to 4 hectares (between 2 and 8 football pitches in size), take around 12 hours and 20-30 km of snowshoeing to create, and are a true artistic performance given the discipline required to create them. Huge works of art in a hilly setting.

Simon Beck takes 90 steps per minute, which is about 65,000 steps to complete a piece of art in the snow.
At 2,000 m, with headphones in hand and drawing in hand, Simon is able to maintain calm, energy and concentration to create his gigantic drawings thanks to classical music.
To mark the 50th anniversary of Les Arcs, Simon Beck created a life-size symbol of the resort: La Coupole. It took our great artist 4 hours of walking and 18,000 steps to complete this huge masterpiece on Lac Marl.
