Many people believe that cars are safe from lightning because rubber tires prevent lightning from striking the car, but this is a myth that has been proven wrong.

Lightning is so powerful (hotter than the surface of the sun!) that it can go through tires or actually melt them. Rubber tires do not provide lightning protection. We also know this to be true because people have been struck by lightning while traveling on motorcycles and bicycles during thunderstorms.

This may seem counter-intuitive since metal is a good conductor of electricity, but the vehicle’s metal cage conducts the lightning current safely to the ground around the vehicle’s occupants. Once inside the car, don’t touch the metal and pull off the road until the storm has passed. A good rule of thumb is to keep your hands in your lap until the storm passes.

Things You Should Do Upon Your Vehicle Delivery
1. Plan ahead. If there’s a chance of thunderstorms, don’t position yourself too far from a safe shelter. The First Alert Weather app is a great tool to help you plan your outdoor time in advance.
2. Don’t wait to seek shelter if the weather looks threatening. Once you hear thunder, it’s time to cancel/postpone outdoor activities and head straight for shelter. In rain-free areas, lightning can travel 10 miles (rarely even 15 miles) before a thunderstorm. Many suffer on their way to safe haven because they do not stop their activities early enough.
3. Only sturdy buildings and rigid vehicles are safe places from lightning. No place outside is safe from lightning. Picnic shelters, trees, tents, small toilets, baseball fields, etc. They are not lightning safe.

4. Wait 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder. Just as lightning strikes miles ahead of a storm, lightning strikes behind it.
5. Once indoors, stay away from corded phones and don’t shower or use computers until the storm has passed. If lightning strikes a building or nearby, it can send a charge through wires or plumbing and injure anyone who touches it. Cell phones are safe.

If you’re stuck outdoors while hiking or camping and don’t have a completely safe shelter (like a vehicle or building) nearby, there are a few things you can do to reduce your chances of getting hurt as a last resort. Go to the lowest available place (avoid open areas such as fields and bodies of water including lakes/rivers) and crouch on the balls of your feet. Be as small as possible and minimize the surface area of your body touching the floor. Again, this is a last resort and NOAA actually stopped recommending the “lightning crouch” in 2008 because people shouldn’t use the crouch unless better options are available. If you check the weather forecast before moving from safe haven, you should never find yourself in this situation.
