The post office was established on 26 January 1988 under the Department of Post Offices in Goa. Scientist G. Sudhakar Rao was appointed as head of the first honorary post. In its first year of operation, nearly 10,000 letters were mailed and canceled at the Dakshin Gangotri Post Office.

In 1712, Governor Harrison (1711–1717) first established a corporate mail service in Madras to carry letters to Bengal by dakhk. By 1736, a rather grandiose visionary postal system was in place. In 1774, the system of stamping personal letters was started. In 1785 and 1786, John Philip Burlton and Thomas Lewin, East India Company civilians, advised the Governor of Madras to enact postal regulations, develop a postal network, and establish a postal authority. This secured the establishment of a post office at Fort St. George, so a fee can be charged for the founding staff papers, which until now have been brought free of charge at Government expense. Accepting this proposal, the first Madras post office with fixed postage—GPO Madras—was founded by Governor Sir Archibald Campbell (1786–1790), who also founded an orphanage for boys and girls (which developed into St. George’s School). The postal service was made a government facility in 1786.

I consider myself lucky to have such a great post office just 2km from my house. And for a philatelist like me, having a dedicated stamp counter and friendly staff to attend to is a feast. Even today it is my custom to visit this ancient building at least once a week. Sometimes, I drive at night just to experience the British Raj monument in Nagpur. GPO is the favorite among them.

The Cooch Behar State Post and Telegraph Office opened in 1875 under the administrative control of the Rangpur Postal Division. The Cooch Behar Post Office originally functioned in a building located at the Old Post Office Para. Today it covers 8893 square feet. The current Central Post Office building was built by Maharaja Nruprendra Narayan, who under Cooch Behar had one telegraph office and five post offices. At the branch of Rangpur Division, Jalpaiguri Division was formed and then on 16 April 1979 Cooch Behar Division was formed at the branch of Jalpaiguri Division.

Old Delhi General Post Office (GPO) is the post office for India Post. During the British Raj, operating from 1885, the GPO was built near the Old City Walls Kashmir Gate near the Old Delhi Railway Station. This is the oldest post office in Delhi.
Built in a neo-classical colonial architectural style, the façade of the two-storey building is divided into five bays by columns using the classical Tuscan order on the ground floor and pilasters on the top floor.

The building known today as the General Post Office or GPO stands as a testament to the changing times in Hazratganj. The GPO building was constructed of red brick and limestone in a Gothic architectural style. The outer facade of the structure is painted white. The building consists of a large central hall which serves as the main post office. The tall clock tower is mounted on one side. A triangular garden also adorns this complex.
During the British era, the GPO was the Theater of the Ring. It was used for entertainment by British families. It became the stage for showing British films and British plays were also staged here. A sign reading ‘No Dogs and Indians!’, hangs permanently at the entrance. Thus, Indians were strictly prohibited from entering the building. Later, a post office functioned in a poor tourist bungalow. It’s just a small hall with 3 rooms and used for a while. In 1866, the Postal Department took possession of the entire building and maintained it until 1878, when it was decided to demolish part of the building and build a new one to accommodate the Post and Telegraph Department. The Post Office moved into its present building in December 1883, and together with the Telegraph Office and the Law Courts form an impressive group of ornate buildings on Mount Road.
The office which serves as the head office is classified as a heritage site by the Government of India and the office acts as the gathering center for the other seven taluk branches.

Chicago Federal Building
Shimla GPO was founded in 1883 in the heart of the city – Mall. The site was originally known as ‘Connie Lodge’ and was purchased from Mr Peterson at the time. Mr F Dalton was the first postmaster of the GPO.
The building is mostly a wooden structure with a tin roof. An interesting feature of the design is the massive stone and brick pillars that criss-cross its height, making it an excellent example of English Highlands architecture. It’s on the Register of Cultural Heritage Post Office Buildings. I’m not 100 years old. I totally get that having a cool post office isn’t the greatest thing you can be proud of in 2020, but I think it’s neat.
As a millennial, I don’t use snail mail very often. I think it’s fair to say that I have lived in 3 post offices in my entire life. No offense to anyone who works in the post office or the US Postal Service, but each trip is more boring than the next.
