Originally connecting Troutdale to The Dalles, this road was heavily used until the 1950s when I-84 was built, leaving the historic road in much of its glory. The Columbia River Gorge National Area Act of 1986 helped restore the road, and today, all but 5 miles of the original highway are open, however, some areas have been designated as for pedestrians and cyclists only. Take the trip from Troutdale to Horsetail Falls to enjoy many waterfalls and beautiful views on this scenic drive not far from home.

On the first day, you’ll cruise around the Columbia River – stopping at leisure to enjoy sights like the Vista House and Multnomah Falls before your first night in Hood River. On Day 2, hike around the east side of Mt. Hood and end the day at the beautiful Timberline Lodge. You can stay here and explore the slopes of the volcano in the morning or return to Portland tonight.

You already know I love the Pacific Coast Trail from top to bottom; I’ve written about it from Seattle to San Diego. While most people focus on California when planning a PCH road trip, I also strongly advocate driving the Washington and Oregon coasts if you have the time.

Mt.saint Helens, Columbia River Gorge And Cannon Beach

The Oregon coast runs its own highway from Portland, if you’re based in the Rose City and don’t want to drive the entire Pacific Coast route. Leave Portland for Astoria and head south (as I recommend for all PCHs).

As for stops, I always recommend Seaside and Haystack Rock, Newport and Devils Punchbowl State Park, and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area along the coast. At the end of your trip, you’ll make a short stop in California for one night in the Crescent City before returning to Portland.
