The uplifting effect of water was always obvious to Nichols, but it wasn’t until he traveled the world studying sea turtles as a marine biologist that he realized just how big a role water plays in the human mind. “I noticed that whenever people were near the water, they were more relaxed, conversations improved, and people seemed to really find healing – whether it was anxiety, burnout, or even addiction.” Inspired, he looked for a book on psychology that explained this phenomenon. Finding nothing, he decided to take matters into his own hands and write it himself.
“I knew the effect I was seeing was neurochemical. It wasn’t just an idea that fell out of the blue,” Nichols says. “The fact that your emotions are changing around water means that a chemical reaction is going on.” There is science to back it up. A study he cited in a book by the Brain Research Institute in Oklahoma found that float tanks are one of the best ways to treat anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. “If you’re on a boat and you stand on your back for a swim or a swim in the ocean, you get into this kind of healing mode. Everything you’re worried about goes away.”
So what is it about water that has such a calming effect on us? “Part of it has to do with what the water is doing away with,” Nichols explains. He removes everything that keeps us off the ground. It stops us psychologically, and these things have grown exponentially in the last few decades.

You stand on the bow and look ahead, you might see a few other boats, birds, clouds,” Nichols says. “It creates a visual pattern that’s naturally relaxing. It’s rhythmic, but not boring. It’s meditative, so it helps us relax.” Another study in the book, conducted by the University of Exeter, found that water increased self-reported happiness and well-being. “In the last five years, the number of clinical studies in blue brain science has increased dramatically, and they’re all talking about the same thing,” says Nichols.
Nichols refers to a report he did for the Maritime Association on the behavior of the brain on board ships. “The main conclusion was that ships are the best way for humanity to access the blue mind,” Nichols says. “Boats come in all shapes and sizes, from basic canoes to high-tech sprees, but they all offer a proven way to relax.” No wonder most superyacht owners enjoy their destination as much as their journey.
“Traveling by water is slower than other modes of transport – so it’s really a lifestyle,” says Nicholls. “If you’re not enjoying the journey, you’re missing 99.9% of the experience. These are the important moments where you come and go, but everything in between is truly valuable. No wonder Nichols’ life motto is that “We believe in slowness.”

Nichols even finds that his feelings change when he’s on the boat. “I’ve found that the first few days I’m in the water, my brain slowly changes from red to blue, and my perception of time changes with it. With a red mind, you’re more visually and auditory. You’re done, and your day is made up of checklists and tasks. As soon as you step away from that and look at the water, there’s a huge cognitive shift. It’s relaxing to even think about it.
Of course, there are ways to relax on land, in forests, and in parks, but Nichols says, “Almost every study has shown that when you add water to green spaces, it’s better for us than just greening. It should be public.” Be aware that a blue mind is part of the cure, especially since anxiety and stress are at an all-time high. Nichols recently worked with a group of yacht owners in Australia who were firefighters. For Nichols, who lives in Monterey Bay overlooking the Pacific Ocean, access to the blue mind is as easy as a window.
