Starting in 2008, when I was at Union College, I had more flare-ups than the average person, maybe every two months. I would wake up around 2am and be sick for 16 hours. That’s probably when it started, but I didn’t realize [something was wrong] until my first year of graduate school and the beginning of my second semester. I was very sick.

At that point, I was spiking every day, several times a day, for two to three months. It was terrifying. Then it calmed down and ended up being once or twice a week, but at the end of my first year of graduate school I took three months off for medical leave.

To be honest, I was safe [with my family] before. I thought it was food poisoning or stress or a sensitive stomach. My dad is a doctor and my mom is an RN, so when I had these symptoms, my dad would call a gastroenterologist he knew and he would tell him how to treat me, but he Didn’t work either. My mom would drive 45 minutes to shoot me at 3 in the morning and come clean my apartment if I couldn’t make it. When it got really bad, [my parents] were very motivated to find a doctor, get a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. We talk a lot about my condition in the family. It helps that [my brother’s] family is a doctor, a nurse, and soon to be a doctor, and it’s funny how they go from family mode to doctor mode. A simple “How have you been feeling lately?” turns into a bunch of medical questions.

I went to all kinds of doctors. They found that immunoglobulin levels were low, suggesting immune deficiency. I saw an immunologist, but he actually had the answer. I went to a psychiatrist to see if it was mental health related and they ruled it out but I thought I had a mental disorder. I’m in a PhD program, it’s really stressful and I can’t figure out why I keep shaking.
Then one day, my twin brother, who is in medical school, emailed me with a link to a website about cyclic vomiting syndrome, and he said, I’ve never actually asked [exactly what he linked How found]. My brother is very smart and a complete worker, so I’m sure he encountered this in class. He passed it on to my parents and they were able to find me a GI specialist in Los Angeles and then a cyclic vomiting specialist in Texas. I met him about three months ago, I was diagnosed.

I live about 45 minutes away from my parents and if they happen to have an episode they will pick me up. My boyfriend James, who I’ve been living with since October 2015, will help, but if he’s not around, [my parents] don’t inject me with promethazine [

Last year, though, I had an incident in Colorado and had to go to the hospital. It was probably five hours before I got the medicine and during that time I was pooping about 12 times an hour. I actually had to call an Uber to take me to the hospital because I was passing out from dehydration. :30 I called him to explain my situation and asked if he would be willing to take me. He was compassionate and understanding. He helped me to the car and to the hospital. He kept trying to distract me by telling me stories about college students he kicked out of CU, which was a nice gesture, but I couldn’t stop the bag. Not my greatest moment.

In my senior year of high school, I had another three months where I spoke almost every day. At that time I missed weddings, family functions, parties, events and exams because I was so sick. Before my diagnosis, I also felt bad. I was a TA and had to cover for my co-workers, and you know how it goes in school; It was hard for my friends to believe me. This is truly an incredible situation. It sounds like you are making things up. But some of my close friends had witnessed an incident at some point.
That it was a debilitating condition, especially before his treatment, is not conclusive. I feel very lucky to not have a long-term diagnosis to worry about, but it makes his job really difficult. It’s unbelievable that it took me this long to diagnose because it seems so obvious now, but I think it’s typical for people with cyclic vomiting syndrome. This is an exclusion diagnosis, so there is a lot of work to be done to mitigate the situation.

I really studied and studied in school and it really hindered my ability to be a good student and be effective in my field [in the future]. And I took this sense of failure upon myself. I don’t think I gave myself enough space to heal, so telling this great doctor at this great hospital helped me a lot.
