Halloween Candy Facts – Halloween is a holiday full of traditions, often with candy as the centerpiece of the fun. This Halloween, the National Confectioners Association is sharing five facts about the holiday.
“Halloween is a special time in the candy industry,” said NCA President and CEO John Downs. “There are 55,000 bakery employees in communities across the country who work hard to create special products for everyone to try for Halloween, and we know Americans will enjoy it in moderation as they do year round.”
Halloween Candy Facts
Americans know that candy is medicine. Throughout the year, Americans only eat sweets two or three times a week — an average of about 40 calories a day. A full 90 percent of respondents use Halloween to prioritize parenting and communicating with their children over moderation. Four out of five have a plan to help, such as limiting the number of candies your kids can collect or enjoy each day.
Ranking Popular Halloween Candy From Worst To First
Over 75% of Americans buy candy to participate in traditional Halloween activities over the years. Most parents (72 percent) also admitted that they share their child’s candy stash, whether they know it or not. Some parents (47%) say sharing sweets is a rule at home, while others (25%) say they are more likely to eat when their kids aren’t looking.
When it comes to packaging, 85% of Americans say they prefer Halloween candy in smaller packaging — like miniature or snack-sized candy. And speaking of packaging, 65% of people want to buy candy in Halloween packaging, like orange and black packaging, or candy in other Halloween shapes or themes.
The NCA estimates that Americans will support US candy workers this Halloween by spending nearly $2.7 billion on candy. With more than 55,000 jobs in the industry, this economic growth has helped an additional 410,000 Americans work in candy-supported industries such as retail, transportation and agriculture.
Halloween 2022: Most Popular Candy By State
Chocolate in all its forms is the star of Halloween, with 68% of people saying it’s their favorite Halloween treat. The traditional Halloween candy corn comes in a close second, with 10 percent liking it best, while gummy bears and jelly beans are tied, with 7 percent of Americans choosing them as their favorite. However, more than a quarter of adults noticed that their favorite candy has changed over time.
The 2016 NCA Seasonal Survey was conducted by 210 Analytics, LLC using a database comprised of several million respondents who agreed to participate in the survey survey. The interviews took place through a self-administered online questionnaire. To maintain sample reliability and integrity, each invitation has a password that is uniquely assigned to that email address and must be entered at the start of the survey. Web-assisted interview software is used to control quotas to mirror the census profile in terms of key demographics such as age, income, region, and other factors. The survey was completed by 1,391 individuals in October 2016. The margin of error is +/-2.7%.

What 100 Calories Of Halloween Candy Looks Like
Sweet corn has been around for over 100 years. According to legend, a Wunderlee Candy Company employee named George Renninger invented the confection in the 1880s. The Goelitz Candy Company (now the Jelly Belly Candy Company) began producing sweet corn at the turn of the century and continues the tradition to this day.
Sweet corn first appeared when the United States was a predominantly agrarian society, and its tricolor design was considered revolutionary. The lack of automated machinery meant that sweet corn was only produced seasonally, likely starting production in late August and continuing through the fall. It has remained unchanged for over 100 years and is a Halloween favorite.
In the 1900’s, many men had to work together to make sweet corn. Sugar, corn syrup and other ingredients are cooked into a paste in large kettles. Fondant and marshmallows are added to give it a smooth, bite-like texture, and 45 pounds of hot candy are poured into buckets called runners. Men called “stringers” walked backwards, pouring the candy into cornstarch trays printed in the shape of a crumb. It takes three passes to create the colors white, yellow and orange. At first, it was delivered in wagons in wooden boxes, tubs and cardboard boxes.

The process of making sweet corn is very similar today, but machines now do most of the work. Manufacturers use the cornstarch molding process, where grain shapes are made in a cornstarch tray. The sweet corn is made end to end in three colored passes. First, the depression is filled with a partially hardened white candy known as soft cream. Then add the smooth orange cream. The mold is finished with the addition of the yellow cream and the whole candy is cooled. After cooling, the trays are emptied and a confectioner’s icing is added to give the grains a slight shine.
