Never Learned To Ride A Bike – Two years ago, my fiancé, Oliver, and I took a trip to Tulum, Mexico. One day we went to visit the Mayan ruins and took a car as far as we could. But at a certain point we had the choice of riding bikes to the site ourselves or stepping on someone else’s backside to get there. Since I didn’t know how to drive, we had to get a ride. I was so disappointed in myself to see other women just get on bikes and ride away. It wasn’t the first time I felt that way either.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wished I could ride a bike. But I grew up in Cameroon, Africa, where the average person doesn’t have the money to buy one for their kids. That was the case with my parents so I never found out. I thought I never would…and I certainly did

But then the pandemic hit New York, where I now live, and thinking about leaving my home felt like I would be putting my health at risk. However, there were times when I had to go out for essentials like groceries and walking meant I spent more time outside than I felt safe. Riding a train was out of the question – the idea of being anywhere in an enclosed space where I could contract the virus was so terrifying that I told myself,

I could find places faster and spend less time outside. So I ordered a Schwinn and planned to have my fiance Oliver learn how to ride it by practicing on the grass in the park near our apartment in the Bronx.
When it arrived, I immediately had my doubts. I spent the first few days staring at it in my living room wondering what I was thinking. I kept saying things to myself like,
Luckily, Oliver knows how much I can overthink things. He sat me down and reminded me that I already knew how to pedal – that I had been doing it for years on the exercise bike at home.
There May Never Be A Better Time To Go Car Free
I remember how annoying the walk in the park was that day. As I rode the bike onto the sidewalk past its handlebars, I tried not to let my emotions get the better of me. But I was really scared. When my fiancé and I came to an open space, it reminded me again that it was just like my exercise bike at home. “Don’t worry, you’ve been riding a bike for a long time,” he told me when I sat in the saddle for the first time. “You know how to pedal, only now you move. Just think about it.” And so I went about it.
My first attempt at driving it was a complete failure. The second one wasn’t great either. However, the third time I was able to keep my balance for 30 seconds straight and it was such a rush! I was shocked and excited. I really thought it would take at least a month to figure it out. But once I started, I didn’t want to stop.
The next day we went to another park for a walk. And the following week we started going early in the morning when there was hardly anyone at the stadium. The more space we had available, the more space I had to drive. I started circling, clockwise and counterclockwise, straight, and could even look back a little as I pedaled. I’m not ready to hit the streets of New York…yet.
Teaching Those With Special Needs To Ride A Bike
But this trip taught me a lot about myself and I take the lesson into other areas of my life.
I’m a personal trainer and I see so many people who are afraid to start working out or think it’s too late to start. Now I have something tangible to show them and say, “See how I couldn’t drive at 32?” I didn’t let the fear of not knowing how to do something or the fear of failure stop me from pursuing my goals. And they need to see it.
While I was documenting my cycling journey on Instagram, I had clients messaging me and checking my progress. In a way, I had to switch places with them somehow.

I think too often trainers have this complex, “I can do anything”, and I never want to appear like that. We also have obstacles. And I hope I can use mine as an example to not give up and inspire others to do the same because I can’t even express how happy this small victory makes me!

For years, Abiola Abdulrahman sat on the sidelines and watched her children ride their bikes while she never learned to ride.
“I grew up in Nigeria and it’s not something we do as kids, like riding a bike was a luxury. So you have to come from a very rich family to own a bike,” he said.
Bicycles Have Evolved. Have We?
“Well, I wasn’t from that kind of family. So we’ll do other activities, but not cycling.”
Recently, the 41-year-old mother decided it was time to learn so she could keep up with her two children. With the help of a few lessons, Abdulrahman is now happily traveling with them.
“You know, you just move and you just feel that this thing that I thought was impossible is something that I love to do. And then I can see my kids’ faces, how they love it,” she said.

It’s never too late to learn to ride 1 year ago Duration 1:50 Thanks to the pandemic, people are rediscovering the love for cycling. Abiola Abdulrahman grew up in Nigeria and never learned how to ride a bicycle. But now the 41-year-old cycling mother of two has decided it’s time to find out. Most of us learn how to ride a bike in childhood. But as we get older, many of us stop cycling and put those once-loved bikes in storage. Years later, when we discover these relics and jump, it’s as if we never stopped cycling.
This is surprising because our memories fail us in so many other cases, such as remembering the name of a place or person we once knew or where we put our keys. So how do we ride a bike if we haven’t for years?

As it turns out, different types of memories are stored in separate areas of our brain. Long-term memory is divided into two types: declarative and procedural.
There are two types of declarative memory: Memories of experiences like the day we started school and our first kiss are called episodic memory. This type of recall is our interpretation of an episode or event that occurred. Actual knowledge, on the other hand, like the capital of France, is part of semantic memory. These two types of declarative memory content have one thing in common – you know the knowledge and can transfer the memories to others.
However, skills such as playing an instrument or riding a bicycle are anchored in a separate system called procedural memory. As the name suggests, this type of memory is responsible for performance.

One of the most famous studies showing separate memory systems was that of an epileptic named Henry Gustav Molaison (also known as H. M.). In the 1950s, he had parts of his brain removed, including large parts of his hippocampus. After the operation, doctors found that although the number of seizures decreased, H.M. unable to form new memories. Many of his memories of the time before the operation were also erased.
To learn more about his memory loss, neuropsychologists conducted several tests with H.M.
