A lama without pajamas. It’s fun to say. It is also interesting to read 100 poems. Poems have no structure or style, but works with similar themes are often grouped together. It is used effectively in three poems that are felt in the development and passage of time. A well-known lama, without his pajamas, begins in the middle of one of the longest poems in the collection. The collection covers a wide range of themes: from dress-up and difficult babies, worms and frogs to tigers and bears (no lions, sadly). Poems can also vary in length from three lines to over a page. This is a punchy staccato rhythm suitable for choral reading by students. It also happens to describe the life cycle of a frog, so it’s good for use in a scientific community. Overall, Hoberman’s poetry is reminiscent of Shel Silverstein, but without the cheeky edge. This is not a criticism of Hoberman. The poem is very emotional and romantic, even in the poem asking for mercy from the cockroaches. Hoberman often asks his readers to explore the world through the eyes of his poet, and sighs for compassion for the often misunderstood animals and insects.
Fraser’s paintings are a combination of watercolor and gouache. Metaphors are used in various ways throughout the book. Put one poem on one page, or a list of poems on one page. Some paintings have multiple themes, such as the lake that Fraser painted on two sets of poems on two pages, “Catch” and “Duck.” Ducks are swimming in the lake where the narrator of “Catch” went fishing. The details are amazing, like the bed canopy in “All My Clothes” and the detail in “Meg’s Egg.” Fraser’s attention to detail is excellent, especially the patterns. The close-up presentation of insects makes this book a great addition to any science or biology class. Many of the poems could be read without Fraser’s illustrations, but they are so well rendered that it would be a shame not to see them. “When I Miss a Real Child” is written with small pictures of a girl dressing her little boy as a baby while playing. It adds so much to reading the poem when you see it. two other poems. I think this is a good continuation that Fraser shows throughout the book how numbers are used in several poems.

There are few situations where poetry does not work. Out of the 100 poems, only “B” was popular. It’s a little hard to follow.
Many of these poems appeal to many people. Some are more thoughtful than others, and will be appreciated by older groups of students (high school, and possibly middle school options) (The title of one poem, “Procyonidae,” is the common name for several related genera of animals: the raccoon, the coati, and apple). Science teachers can have students find and write a group for each animal mentioned in the poem. Some poems can be used to illustrate or explain different writing devices, such as rhythmic patterns and intonation.
