Royal icing gives cookies a smooth finish, but requires a little effort to make from scratch. The perfect substitute is one of these easy recipes using a jar of pre-made frosting.

Microwave one jar of white frosting (vanilla has a yellow color, so be sure to use white) in 10 second increments until just runny. This should take a total of 20-30 seconds. Stir between heating. Do not overheat, otherwise frost can separate. You can pipe the frosting while you decorate if needed – 10 seconds at a time.
Spoon a tablespoon (adjust the amount according to the size of the cookie) of liquid frosting into the center of the cookie and tip from side to side until the frosting forms a smooth circle on the floor. Place the cookies on the parchment paper until the frosting forms a crust / hardens on the surface, about 1 hour.

You can freeze decorated sugar cookies. Make sure the frosting is done. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and place cookies in a single layer on the sheet. Place the sheet in the freezer for 2-3 hours or until the cookies are frozen. Remove from the freezer and carefully wrap the frozen cookies in wax paper and place in a ziplock freezer bag or airtight container with a lid. Cookies can be frozen for up to 3 months.
You can store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days. Although royal icing doesn’t keep well in the fridge, we use canned icing which keeps well in the fridge.

There’s something about decorating Christmas cookies that makes the holiday season complete. It’s amazing to see how creative kids can be when it comes to frosting and decorating cookies.
It has become a tradition in my house to decorate Christmas cookies, which for us means sugar cookies with frosting. These easy Christmas cookies below will let your kids’ creativity shine and keep it simple for you.
Easy Icing For Decorating Cookies
Roll out the finished cookie dough and place it on a flat surface, such as a counter or cutting board. Ask the children to cut the dough into circles. Place the round cookies on the baking sheet. Bake cookies according to package directions. Allow to cool.
You want the frosting to be thicker. If the frosting is too runny, add 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar and mix. Repeat until the frosting is thick enough not to melt the cookies.
Divide the frosting, leaving a little more than half in the bowl. Place the other half of the frosting in a small bowl. Then add 1 teaspoon of milk until thin. You should have 1 bowl of thick frosting and 1 bowl of thin frosting.

TIP: A kid-friendly way to fill ziplock bags with frosting is to place a ziplock bag in a cup, fold the top of the bag over the edge of the cup, and then have the kids fill the bag with frosting.
Add red food coloring to one bottle or ziplock bag and green to the other. Mix by shaking the bottle or squeezing the ziplock bag until mixed.
Cut a small part of the corner of the zipper bag, roll up the bag like a pastry bag, and you are ready to decorate!

Once the cookies have completely cooled, cover each cookie with a thicker layer of white frosting. Place small red and green dots on the white frosting.
Using a toothpick or wooden skewer, gently drag the colored dots to blend the colors or create a heart pattern.
You can always roll out store-bought cookie dough if your kids really want to use cookie cutters to cut out different shapes. Shape the dough into a disk, then roll it out on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out cookies.
Easy Christmas Cookie Decorating Hacks
I wish I knew the secret to mess-free cookies. Then again, making a mess is half the fun for kids. One option to keep the mess to a minimum is to set up a cookie decorating station for each child. Place the cookies on a paper plate or baking sheet lined with parchment or a cutting board. This will help minimize the number of drops that end up on the floor. After the cookies are decorated, throw them on a paper plate or parchment paper.
First, let the cookies dry after icing. Then store in an airtight container or freeze. If desired, you can add a piece of parchment paper between each cookie layer. This will make it easy to separate the cookies when your child is ready for a treat.
After the colored frosting is swirled to mix with the white frosting, it’s officially time to sprinkle! Pick up a dollop of sprinkles with your fingers, then rub each cookie.

Looking for more decorating options? White chocolate chips, crushed peppermint pieces, powdered sugar, chopped walnuts or pecans, or crushed Oreos are great alternatives or additions to sprinkles.
