Earlier versions of “Twelve Days” had completely different lyrics, including “Bears a Baiting”. It refers to the then popular “sport” of tying up a bear, then trying to maim and kill it with dogs of war. Naturally, this day is considered a holiday.

Since the term “wild bird” was unfamiliar to listeners, it was natural for them to change it to “calling birds”. It’s a big blur but has a nice ring to it.

Though impossible, a gift of 7 swans will definitely add some romance to it. Four black birds? Not too much. Why is it in the song?
