The 12 News Filth Finder works by counting the living things on the surface of the water. A number below 30 means that the face is very clean. A score of 30 or more is difficult – and it can make you sick.
We tried three public bathrooms. One at a gas station, another at a fast food restaurant and a grocery store.
“The things you have to pay attention to are the faucet handles, because you touch them with your hands and eventually the door handles when you release them,” Carroll said.

Nearly 40 million Americans fill up their gas tanks every day, but most people don’t think twice before lifting the handle or pushing the button to do so. But maybe you should. If we look at the level of bacteria based on colony-forming units (CFU) – the number of viable bacterial cells – in items that are normally considered garbage, gas pumps and buttons are absolute garbage. On average, gas pumps have 11,000 times more bacteria than the average household toilet seat. And the pump station button is even worse: about 15,000 times more bacteria! As mentioned earlier, the average fuel pump has more than 2 million CFU/sq. But what kind of germs are growing on them? Our research shows that the gas pump is similar to gram-positive cocci (can cause skin infection, toxic shock syndrome and pneumonia) and gram-positive rods (usually harmless, but sometimes can cause different types of infections). . There are even bacterial symptoms associated with food poisoning and infections in newborns.
While you might think owning an electric car keeps you from coming in contact with these nasty germs, electric charging stations are breeding grounds for gram-positive cocci and gram-positive rods. What’s more, you have the potential to harbor yeast (which can cause skin infections, especially in people with compromised immune systems). If you use the pump we sampled, the answer is yes. According to our findings, ordinary gas buttons have about 3,255,100 CFU / sq. Four types of germs were also detected: gram-positive rods (32.5 percent), gram-positive cocci (31 percent), bacilli (31 percent), and gram-negative rods (5.4 percent). Gram-negative strains can be particularly nasty—not only are they resistant to antibiotics, but they can cause deadly infections like meningitis and pneumonia.
If this leads you to switch to premium gas, you should know that no matter what pump you choose, you’ll get germs. In fact, the premium gas button has 2,022,034 CFU/sq. in., and it contains the same number of gram-positive rods and yeast (49.97 percent) and destroys the number of bacilli (.05 percent).
Gas stations and charging stations are full of invisible pests. And since many people have to add fuel at any time of the day, it is almost impossible to regularly clean the pump, buttons and handles. Worse, germs on a person’s hands can move seven times before leaving the skin. This creates a very bad situation.
