How To Make Wooden Spoon Puppets

How To Make Wooden Spoon Puppets – Hi everyone, this is Jenny from The Lovely Little Nest and I’m so excited to share with you all how to make these adorable wooden spoon dolls! Aren’t they such cute little forest animals?

It’s been really rainy here for the past month, so we’ve stuck to mostly indoor activities. We had everything at home to make these little dolls and it became a great rainy day activity that my two year old keeps asking to do. Let’s hope I don’t go down one day to make him take pictures of every spoon in the kitchen.

1.  Paint all the spoons. We stick to one color of paint per spoon to make it easy for my little one to participate in (and easy for me, let’s be honest). When she got tired of painting with that color, I gave her a nice and quick tap on the spoon and gave her another spoon and color to work with.

2. When all the spoons are dry, draw your designs on them with a pencil. I decorated this one because my little ones are too young to draw anything but doodles, but if you have kids who can draw, they will love this part.

Be creative, the dolls can look like you want. I drew my designs on paper before transferring them so I wouldn’t mess up the paint job. If you really like the ones I designed, go here and get the free pattern download, then use the classic paper transfer trick to transfer them onto the pencil spoons.

3.  Then I grabbed my set of permanent markers and metal pens and went to town decorating these little woodland creatures. I had a white permanent marker on hand which was so much easier than using white paint for the little details. The metallic pens I used to add lots of shiny details. I love how they shimmer!

5. When I finished all my painting and drawing, I gave them a clear coat to protect this little bunch of friends from too much wear.

6. If you want to glue on all the accessories, go to town. We put a small cotton tail on the rabbit’s back.

All you have to do is make a puppet theater and watch your little ones perform. We used some rope and clothespins we had around the house to pull up the blanket for a makeshift theater. Enjoy the show!

The past few days we have been working on a new craft project. With all the time we’ve had, it’s been nice to have a big project to work on. If you haven’t already guessed, what we’re making is our very own DIY puppet theater and some wooden spoon puppets to go with it. We had so much fun both making our dolls and playing with them, and today I’m really excited to share with you the first of the new creations, our wooden spoon princess doll.

Isn’t she just adorable? She has been the center of many of my boys stories, sometimes she is the princess who needs saving, and sometimes she is the one who saves everyone. One thing I’ve definitely noticed since playing with dolls is that as much as it helped strengthen my little boys ability to create a story, it also helped his confidence.

To start, place your lollipop stick in the center of the top of the spoon to make two arms. Then give your princess some hair, to do this we glued pieces of wool around the curve of the spoon. Add two eyes and a mouth to make his face.

To make the dress, place your doll on the back of the felt and draw the shape of your dress around it on paper. You need to make sure that your dress is wider than your doll in all places.

To save the dress, you can simply pin one piece of the dress in the front. However, we plan to use our dolls for a long time and want to make them as strong as possible. We traced our dress shape and cut out a second identical piece to make the back. If you decide to cut the back as well, remember to go with the dress both sides out, as they will be on the spoon if your pieces may not match.

To make our princess cape, we cut a white cape shape with an elongated V-shaped collar. Now the collar may look a bit strange, but that’s how the hood falls around your spoon.

To secure the dress, pin your first dress to the front and your second to the back. Then glue them together to meet and glue in the middle. To add a caboose, place the doll on top in the center (felt side facing). Remove the back of only the square at the end of each side of your collar and fold the collar over the arms before pinning them together at the chest. Then my little guy added a cute little bow to look like a bow.

Grab your wooden spoons. I had smaller wooden spoons that I used that were about the size of regular small plastic spoons. You can also use larger wooden spoons for this activity.

Get your skin colors brown, white and beige and black. Blend them until you get different skin tones. We painted four spoons with four different skin colors. Set them aside to dry.

Once dry it’s time to decorate them. Glue yarn of different colors for the hair. Take a piece of cloth and wrap it around the handle of a clothes spoon. Attach with glue. We also added buttons.

You can also dress up your dolls with markers. Instead of fabric, just color the body of the wooden spoon with markers and decorate with buttons.
