The story follows another day when Ferris Bueller fakes an illness to solve problems at school. Ferris convinces his best friend Cameron Frye and his girlfriend Sloane to skip school as well. Sloane makes a missed call and apologizes to her grandmother for being sick. The friends spend the day exploring Chicago’s famous landmarks.

With record numbers of people out of work, students forced to walk home from school, and almost everyone risking their own health and the health of others simply by going to the grocery store, many things are looking bleak right now. Self-isolation can feel like a creative block for those who like to dress up and are confined to their homes with no reason to carefully consider their outfits every day. I rewatched the John Hughes cult classic, hoping to bring some inconsequential drama back into my life instead of the regular campus coffee shop gossip with friends.

In particular, I was surprised to see so much iconic fashion from the mid-80s, and while I was inspired by people’s clothing, I created the most modern characters with a spirit of staying at home.

Played by Mia Sara, Sloane Peterson was Ferris Bueller’s cool girlfriend. Throughout the film, Sloane can be seen wearing a white cropped fringe jacket, gray shorts above the knee, and white pearl boots to match the jacket. The cowgirl meets Los Angeles aesthetic is complemented by Sloane’s light brown leather crossbody bag and Cartier Must de Cartier watch, worn on the wrist with a delicate bracelet. By combining this ensemble with the attitude of the character Sara plays, Sloane has established herself as an 80s teenage movie icon.

It has less to do with her outfit itself and more to do with her accessories. Chief among them is her quirky, angular 80s car (which Ferris is quite jealous of) and her tote bag, which she furiously drags throughout the film. Perhaps by design, Jeanie’s bag is very prominent in many of her scenes. It’s a shiny black tote bag covered in a large distinctive patch that looks like a logo of some kind, and the bag itself stands out, especially because of the dark color that contrasts with her light pink sweater. Of course she has her car. It is the white 1985 Pontiac Fiero that throws Jenie onto the road in several scenes and eventually slides off Bueller’s driveway towards the end of the film. Given Ginny’s brooding and decidedly agitated tendencies, both the bag and the car seem to be extensions of her personality rather than just objects she uses.

Katie Bueller is perhaps the most unexpected character in the film, as an article about 80s fashion in a teenage movie. Her standout look included a sparkly one-piece necklace, colorful earrings, and a belt with an asymmetrical geometric buckle (unfortunately not pictured).

A film that follows days behind the high school experience of a girl who makes many of her own clothes, it’s fair to first highlight the fashion sense of the protagonist Andie Walsh, surprisingly played by Molly Ringwald.
