Michael Allsup Net Worth – Modesto Rock Origins is Rockin! You may never have been to Spain, or written an Old Love Song, but you know the music of Three Dog Night. What you may not know, is that the origins of Three Dog Night began right here in Modesto USA. Michael Allsup was the founding guitarist of Three Dog Night in the 60’s and they took the music world by storm. Michael Allsup knows his history, and his accounts of his rock and roll years are some of the best guides anyone can learn from. Michael was instrumental in the creation of the Modesto Historic Cruise Line kiosk. Three Dog Night will make a big return to Modesto on October 12th at the Gallo Center for what is sure to be a crowd pleaser, filled with songs like Joy to the World, Black and White and one of my favorites, One. Modesto is indeed a big part of music history. We caught up with Michael Allsup to reflect on Modesto’s music history.
: What inspired you to become a musician? Michael Allsup: First, my LOVE for her… that would be the big thing. I have been in a cappella music throughout my youth while attending the Church of Christ here in Modesto. (It is located in the now empty triangle formed by La Loma Ave, Burney St., and Rue De Yoe I believe) I would say my biggest inspiration came from my aunts, uncles and cousins who played and sang. However, there was one person in particular who helped me with just his moral support and encouragement. It will be J. B. Pemberton (John). Great family friend. He is very supportive. It’s amazing what a simple “pat on the back” can do for an insecure 13 or 14 year old. My blind guitar teacher Ted Nelson ALSO played a role in his love and guidance. He gave me everything I could understand and made it fun. He seemed very happy with me… that I really liked him and I took him very quickly. I have to mention Hank De Coito here somehow. He’s been gone for years, but HE also influenced me when I started my musical journey. I’ve heard Hank and his band play at a few different shows. One from the Del Rio Country Club and the other from the Elks Lodge in McHenry. The Handsome Man played the trumpet. He owned and operated the old Modesto Music Store on 13th street before selling it to Doug Holroyd. I once went there and “picked up” a Gibson guitar case. I want to be buried in one place, I don’t know!

MV: When did you realize that you could really break into music? MMA: I didn’t realize it until it happened. Yes, “not much coaching – just playing for fun” in the teenage years. Not responsible at all. Of course, that’s part of the equation for me…and some other successful players. Naive? Of course, but I am more dedicated than my years I thought. Local players like Earl Knight (Kissling) really helped shape and inspire me. Kent Whitt and downbeats put the “biz” shine in my mind too. Thanks to Kent and Bobs (Hedman and De Leon), Connie Hightman and Bill Gross. I should probably include Danny Toledo as well…even though I’ve never heard him play.
World Famous
MV. How did you feel when you got your first #1 hit? MA: I’m happy. I remember well. We are in Peoria, IL. show in 1969. Before we played I was walking around the yard (a country boy from Modesto). Sitting next to the prize bull is a pile of hay with a small radio on top. From it is “ONE” (one number). I clearly remember that moment and what I was thinking. “OH MY GOD! WE’VE GONE”. Amazing, amazing feeling. GRATEFUL would be another word for what I feel.
MV: What surprised you the most about making it big in music? MA: How much will I be tested in the studio. A foreign experience to me, except for the few times I did it in Los Angeles. The most amazing thing about the situation was learning to work with producers and engineers. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s huge. Working on songs that are not from my musical background. Fuzzy songs. Here’s a better way to say it. Playing songs in different styles, and being creative in the process. THAT is the most amazing thing. It is also the greatest gift to me. What an opportunity.
MV: You still live in Modesto, what makes you want to continue to call Modesto home? MAMA: Because I’m home. There’s no place like home… and all that stuff. I enjoyed my travels (in my youth), but today HOME is the best. And let me plug it in for you all here. Vision Modesto is the best thing to happen to Modesto in recent years. I am so proud of what you all are doing. Did you know that I take it with me on the road and read it from the beginning to the end of the flight? No, I did. Your dig into Modesto’s music history is too good to be true for this old empire. Please keep up the good work. Yes, I am also proud of my “niece” Jennifer Allsup for her work at Modesto View.
The Story Behind “the Day Music Died”
MV: What advice would you give to an aspiring musician? MMA: This is a tough question. Old boys love to “crack and share real wisdom” (Ha) , but I don’t think I’ll go down that road. It was very chaotic. It always is, but even more so today. I recently read a quote from Jim Henson (The Muppets) where he talked about not only learning from how other people do things. Explanation: Sometimes figuring it out as you go is the only way to come up with something special. Of course there are better ways to learn a craft these days thanks to the internet and your tube, so you should spend time there too… of course. In my day it was “pick up the record player and put it back where you think the geetar part is” and do your best to learn it by ear. Many players of my generation have done it. Of course some are READING and can customize features that way.
MV. What artists are you listening to right now? MMA: Not many, because my hearing is really bad today. It’s been like that for over 12 years. One of the saddest things in my life: My hearing has such a big problem. If I could listen better, I would spend my time listening to Johnny and Kelly here in Modesto…like most of you do. I still appreciate all kinds of good music. I miss the days when I could hear music (sometimes) even from the wind in the tree leaves. Yes, there is a natural melody and you don’t need drugs to hear it. It’s there if you listen carefully.
The Allsup musical family is still heavily involved in local music with nephews Russ and Mike being mainstays in local music along with Mike’s wife Jennifer who writes our RockabillyView column. Their son Eli continued Allsup’s musical lineage.
