Fly Fishing Rain Gear
The water is sometimes better, but it can take the fun out of being on the water if you don’t have water gear to fish with. Many beginner anglers make the mistake of buying underwater gear, thinking it will be “good enough” or that they will never get caught in a bad storm. That is a mistake, and one of my fishing coaches pointed it out to me before my fishing career. When I asked him what I should buy for a little extra money, expecting him to recommend a special rod or reel, he quickly replied: “The best water gear you can afford.”
Selecting The Best Foul Weather Gear For Fishing
At the time, in the mid-1990s, there weren’t many high-end options made specifically for anglers. Today, we live in the best time for water supplies. Whether you’re looking for a heavy parka or a light jacket, bibs or pants, there’s an option to keep you dry. From my years of putting together professional bass tournaments and as a tournament angler, I’ve tested just about every wetsuit option on the market. Here are my picks for the best water gear for fishing.
Even if it’s raining, rain gear can keep you dry when doing activities like casting a net. Scott Eismann
The best watercraft is the gear you’ll have for the longest time, so consider the options carefully and choose wisely. Here are some factors to consider when choosing.
How To Shoot In The Rain: Fly Fishing Photography Tips
I firmly believe that, all else being equal, bibs will keep you drier than pants and that makes them the obvious choice in most situations. However, I also find that it is very difficult to get on and off, makes it difficult to release, and is often bulky. Don’t sacrifice breath or thirst, but find out what you want to keep hydrated.
The parka hangs low on your back, which means your bum won’t get wet if you sit in a wet seat, but it’s also often heavy and restrictive.
How much can you spend? Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be a penny and fool. Believe me, early in my fishing life I bought a basement, non-certified wetsuit, and quickly found out that it was much better than nothing. It was a huge expense, and it has long since been relegated to the dustbin of history and replaced with better gear.
The Best Fly Fishing Gear For Backpacking
If you use a GoPro or other action camera, the right mounting position can be critical, but not using it can hinder you. In cold weather, fleece packs with a warm lining are essential but maybe not so much if you live in Florida. Many of these features cannot be ordered a la carte, so find the one that has your “needs” and a few of your “don’ts”.
Cabela’s Guidewear line caters to anglers, and the Xtreme Late Season features a time-tested design but with an added edge for cold, wet weather.
My first wetsuit was Cabela’s Guidewear. I wore one outside for over 20 years by abusing it – stuffing it in suitcases, shipping it wet, and exposing it to the worst weather imaginable. After all that abuse you have grown up well. When I’m fishing in cold water, I always grab the Cabela’s Xtreme because I know it won’t let me down in the worst weather. Even my non-padded Guidewear suit is windproof and a bad weather barrier, but this Xtreme suit takes it up a notch by adding great insulation without bulk. While the Xtreme isn’t cheap, it still costs less than many of its competitors and is widely available. Like the first set I bought in the early 1990s, you can expect this one to last a long, long time without absorbing any noticeable moisture, as long as you wash it occasionally. They updated a few features, like the pockets, hood, and sleeve line, but Cabela’s didn’t compromise on the basic formula that always makes this water gear a good buy.
Women’s Fly Fishing Gear Guide: Winter Edition
AFTCO has an illustrious history in saltwater, and has made a major effort in recent years to outfit freshwater anglers. This suit combines freshwater and saltwater, and will also accommodate the big boys without restricting their movement. Bibs cover your entire chest, and both bibs and parkas offer pockets in all the right places. They’re easy to put on, easy to take off, and offer a full range of angler-specific options – like a place to mount your action camera and a pocket designed for pliers , so you don’t have to dig for them. you need them when you need them most. Comfort doesn’t have to mean you have to sacrifice function, no matter what your size, and guys up to 5X will find this wetsuit the best of both worlds.
The Gill Women’s Coast design that doesn’t drip down means that women no longer have to suffer through using gear that isn’t made for them.
For decades, women looking for quality water fishing gear had to buy products that fit the average male body. Little by little, that has changed, and Gill has led the way with this high-quality pants and parka set designed especially for women’s bodies. This is not just a regular water gear that fits well for women, it is one of the best water gear for fishing – highly waterproof, stain resistant and breathable. My wife, who had been wearing the wrong men’s gear for years, was happy with her Gill gear, and literally cried when it disappeared on the trip. It meant a lot to his ability to withstand nature. Fortunately, he quickly found another suit for Gill, and while it’s not cheap, it still costs less than many similar suits—many of which are virtually waterproof.

The Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite wetsuit will keep you dry, and it’s priced to get one on the boat for a friend who forgot to bring theirs.
There are cheap wetsuits, and there are cheap wetsuits – and no one can call this offering from cheap toggs. It does a great job of keeping the elements apart from the competition. You may sacrifice some features, but the price point allows you to buy multiples, so you don’t run out. Want proof that it works? Many of the top competitive anglers I’ve talked to and anglers would use more expensive water gear to fish, but they choose this option because it allows for greater comfort without sacrificing waterproofing. One important thing to note is that while Ultra-Lites are some of the best water fishing gear out there, they don’t last long. If you’re going on a brush hike or planning a trip to Alaska, pack a durable set of fishing gear.
Ironclad means it can withstand the rigors of commercial fishing, meaning any recreational situation you throw at it will be a breeze.
Striker Denali Insulated Rain Jacket
The name Grundens is synonymous with saltwater durability, and although they have been making inroads into the freshwater market in recent years, proof of the dot’s protective quality remains in their saltwater heritage. You can see their suits on deckhands from Northeast party boats and Alaskan commercial crabbers. Outdoor Life staff writer Tyler Freel even used Grundens Tourney water gear while hunting caribou in Alaska.
Historically stable water gear was bulky, non-breathable clothing that could be taken off and ready to go again. Now, stain resistance and reinforcement remain, but with added breathability and comfort. Grundens offers a variety of sets and different price points, but the Ironclad set is the most feature-packed. If you’re looking for the best water gear for saltwater fishing, or extreme conditions, this is the one to buy.
The small size of the Simms Flyweight pack doesn’t have to sacrifice waterproofing, and Simms takes all levels of waterproof gear seriously.
Women’s Rain Jackets & Rain Gear
Whether you’re going to the Amazon rainforest or the Alaskan jungle, you may have limited weight and space, but you’ll definitely be exposed to nature. That makes affordable and well-packaged fishing gear a must. Even if you never visit one of these places, you may be able to take a good suit with you wherever you go. Simms holds nothing back in the design of their fly products, but they don’t take up much space. If I’ve learned one thing in 40 years of fishing it’s that you never leave home without some form of waterproofing, and the size of this set means you’ll always have room to fill it. The parts fit securely and keep water out.
