Repurposed Skateboards – Meeting with the creators of AdrianMartinus Design at their conference in Calgary, Canada. Unique and original creations contribute to sustainability.
The most influential figure in the creation of skateboards was the Japanese skater Hiroshi, who is sort of the grandfather of skateboard recycling. We worked in construction shops as carpenters and started trying to make things out of our old boards in the evenings and on weekends. From then on, we started collecting old boards from our friends and local skateshops and kept testing and improving our process.
Repurposed Skateboards
Adrian and Martinus do most of the planning and construction, as well as marketing and social media. Ann Tranholm (Adrian’s wife) designs and manufactures all of our jewelry, as well as both of our products. It also manages the online store and handles shipping to all of our retailers.
Skate Or Design
As a member of the skateboarding community, how do you let your roots and style of skateboarding shine through in your work?
Skateboarding is always a do-it-yourself thing, and in the early days, many of our projects showed that they used techniques to imitate real wood, but did it in a way that didn’t make sense because of the little things. our knowledge, toolbox, and wonder. . Since then, we have modified many of the original systems and brought them to the level of real wood.
Can you describe the characteristics and peculiarities of your work (need to recycle wood, use old skateboards…)?
Recycled Skateboard Necklace
Many creative processes are determined by the extent of using skateboards and reclaimed wood. The design weakness of recycled and rare materials really forced us to find something in the way we use skateboards that inspired us to find a special purpose for each part of the board, giving us a meaningful different product line , but in a similar style.
Calgary’s long winters are one of the main reasons why short skateboards are such a thing because you can’t ride 6-8 months of the year, so we appreciate this. The big changes that happen over time also really help to maintain a flexible mindset in our work.

There are recycled products as they are recycled. And then there’s Calgary’s Adrian Martinus. Inspired by a Japanese artist and the vast potential of still-useful materials that would otherwise end up in the trash, brothers Adrian and Martinus Poole and partner Anne Tranholm transformed skateboards into beautiful modern furniture, home appliances and jewelry.

We spoke to Martinus Poole about the group’s structure and development process and where they want to go next.
Martinus Poole: My dad got into woodworking as a hobby, so he bought a leveling machine. At that time we had been working on art for a while and started going out on weekends and evenings with our own skateboards that we had been saving. Haroshi, a Japanese artist who is kind of the ancestor of the skateboards that are recycled, became a big inspiration for us, then we started trying to apply it to furniture and product design, learning how to use things and things we can use them for.
W: Let’s back up a bit for those who don’t like skateboarding. How often do skateboards break and have to be replaced? What are we talking about here?
Flip Your Skateboard Into Furniture
MP: Well, I’d go to Calgary—I’d go to the skate shop that kept us [used boards] all the time. I would say we get 50 boards a week in the summer. As for me, I will use a skateboard every two to three months. And if you’re always riding a skateboard and trying to fall and get tricks and stuff like that, you can get a new skateboard every week.
MP: The boards we use are seven layers of maple veneer. In fact, this is the best plywood. Before being pressed into the shape of a skateboard, the cover is painted in different colors. That’s where all the color in the work comes from.
MP: It’s a steep learning curve because it’s not the easiest thing to do. It is also hard on equipment and all paint, dirt, sand and manual tape that needs to be removed. But I think the first thing we did was a baseball bat, where we figured out how to put the boards together to make a big tree.

For a while, we thought that there was only one thing you could do on a board, and we cut things like incense sticks or meat boards. But the baseball bat is something that shows us that we can do anything with it.
Since then, our system is constantly improving, changing and changing. Now we have a process that each board goes through to get different parts for all the different things we do. One board can have 30 or more different products.
MP: Yes, different parts of the tablet become different parts. There is a standard of basic cut-all that goes into the furniture we make so that we can get those perfect, straight, continuous lines. Then we have a cut that goes into the rockers and cribboard, and all the noses go into the bowl. There are also pieces of rocking chairs and boards where things are placed that we make into stackable blocks. Now this system is so complex that each page has a place that is used for different purposes.
Skateboard Creative Reuse
We thought a lot about how to make a skateboard go far. Only six months in Calgary – if we’re lucky – you can sail outside. This restricts supply. That’s why we figured out how to cover the shower board like this: instead of making one board, we can cut it into 10 pieces and place it on the wood all the time so that we can to make the thing distant.
MP: The dining table and the rotating pin are definitely our top sellers. I believe the rolling pin is the longest used in bowls. And since the credenza won an Etsy award last year, we’ve had a steady stream of orders for them, which is really fun. Plus, jewelry always sells well, especially to our dealers. For what it takes to make one sewing board, we can make 50 earrings, so it’s a good thing to have in our catalog of different products.
W: Was there a big learning experience when working with recycled materials or deciding which products would sell well?

MP: I think the most important thing for us is to do all the work in big steps. So, if we need ten boards to use, we don’t clean ten boards—we clean them all. I’m going to spend a whole couple of days just cleaning the graphics on top of the wood to get this thing ready to go.
