Wooden Word Watch – Reviews This wooden word clock from Gulati Designs gives me—well, you know, Wood. He gives me sticks.
It is not often that you meet someone like Harnek Gulati. Gulati studied at Harvard and interned at Intel before eventually joining TagUp, Inc., a startup that is part of the MIT Startup Exchange 25. When he wasn’t busy with electronics and skateboards or endless possibilities, he was finding time. for some sharp Bhangra dance moves.
Wooden Word Watch
He’s not only talented, but he’s also more disciplined and a great friend, as the first Wooden Word Watch he designed and made as a birthday present for his Harvard roommate illustrates. Before we talk about the proliferation of watches in the best way imaginable, I want to talk a little about the great watches that started it all.
Greek Students Should Do Two Translations…
Using hackerspaces, Ponoko, and local workspaces, Harnek designed and built all the necessary parts himself (except for the lettering, which was laser-cut by Ponoko). This can take a lot of physical skills from someone who has never used a saw before, let alone a table saw. Still, he came out the other side with all his fingers intact, so I’ll call that a success.
Since this was basically the first unit, it didn’t meet his appropriate standards, but it was a great learning experience for potential Word Watchers. Fail fast, fail often, learn; right? Also includes a fun feature, the clock that flashes “It’s Ann Marie time!” every day on your birthday. What a thoughtful friend.
Finally, it was time for some birthday presents, so Harnek decided to challenge himself to put the word clock on a small clock. Never one to shy away from a challenge, the original Wooden Word Watch was his first embedded programming project. The completion of the project is due to the teachers working in the Harvard Engineering Teaching Laboratories and the How to Do Almost Anything section. In the Herculean task, he taught himself CAD, basic circuits, design and all other related disciplines. I wish I had a friend like that in college.

The first iteration of the Wooden Word Watch was thick, thin, and a little too bulky to actually wear. The second prototype (pictured above) was slimmer and featured a second time display that used letters to display a standard digital display. The course served as a final project for one of his courses, which helped him secure the necessary funding. The font used on the second prototype was his own creation, as the initial Solidworks font was not suitable for most of the languages he wanted. Fonts, circle tables, wood – are you a modern renaissance man or what?
These prototyping stages (and the final “A” in the project) made him think about a big operation, so he went to Kickstarter and launched a campaign. When the Wooden Word Watch went viral on Imgur, 365 backers stepped up to raise $75,138 to begin production. Don’t worry if you missed out, there are still a few sellers on Harnek’s website – so if you’re after a unique watch, now’s the time. Since I have the watch, whenever someone sees it, they ask for shop details. I can’t think of any recent technology that has gotten such a response. It also went viral on 9GAG in its time, and the original post on r/DIY received over 49k upvotes.
I mean, look, I can totally see what the problem is. It’s stylish, fun and easier to read than a normal watch face. After all, we work with words. Compatible with all 20mm watch bands, this presentation box makes a great gift package if you want a different style or need a longer band. I know Father’s Day has passed, but it’s never too early to start thinking about next year.

This Stylish Wooden Word Watch Lights Up To Tell You The Time
The Wooden Word Watch is a wristwatch with a 10 x 11 line alphabet engraved on a typical sized watch face.
When you press the crown next to the main body, the letters glow like this and indicate the time. On this screen you can see it says “IT’S HALF ONE” and the correct time is around 1:30.
If you press the crown again, this time it will be visible. Even reading the highlighted letters makes no sense, but if you look closely, you can see that the numbers appear as “1:32”.

This watch was designed by Harnek Gulati, who studies electronic optics and mechanical engineering at Harvard University. I traded the watch based on what I made for my best friend Andrew’s birthday present.
The first thing I did when making a watch was to design a design. Computer typesetting based on handwritten handwriting. If you look closely, you can see that there are letters like “QUATER” and “MINUTES” as well as “ONE”, “SIX”, “THREE” and so on. Based on this design, the letters are engraved with a laser cutter on the wooden board that forms the base of the dial.
And this device that installs the small LED chip with Bissiri on the board and flashes the letters.

Mr. Gulati designed the wire himself, it seems that it is double-layered both at the front and at the back of the wheel.
Not only the dial, the body of the watch is also cut from wood. It’s like an engineer, maybe making with an NC machine.
Insert the board into the body of the watch and attach the black covers printed by the 3D printer. If you hit a wooden stick…

I started with a simple solidworks file. The worst part was having to center everything and then type one element for the text, because you can’t move the text in order.
I started with the “straight cut”. I basically just did the same thing on the wood. Because the face is so small, the 0.005-inch laser cut is actually very cutting. Using just one line of a normal stencil letter opens up the entire piece. Rasterization looked better
