The Mississippi Delta was once a 24 million acre forested wetland. Today, only 4.4 million forested hectares remain, mostly in small areas, leading to water quality and habitat problems. Tree planting efforts will improve critical habitat for endangered and threatened species and protect the water quality of the Delta’s rivers and streams.

In 2017, the Hanceville Fire raged in British Columbia, burning 240,000 hectares of land. Because of the extreme heat, parts of the burned forest floor cannot regenerate naturally and must be replanted. Replanting will ensure that residents of the area continue to enjoy all the benefits of the forest, including clean air and water.
The 2017 Elephant Hill fire consumed 1,920 square kilometers of land, leaving it charred and unable to regenerate naturally. This level of destruction took a heavy toll not only on the forests but also on the surrounding ecosystems. Afforestation efforts will help restore the natural state of the soil, improve wildlife habitat, sequester carbon, and protect local waterways.
This reforestation effort is aimed at helping residents recover from the many wildfires that have burned across California, including the Carr and Camp Fires. In the 2018 bushfire season, an estimated 8,000 fires burned over 1.8 million hectares of bush from July to December. Reforestation will ensure that communities across the state do not face increasing problems such as mudslides and degraded soil, water and air quality.

We work with plantation partner Taking Root to provide trees to smallholder farmers throughout the Dominican Republic through a project called Trees with Purpose. This work will support local efforts to transform historically degraded land into diverse, multi-story agroforestry containers. Farmers will learn more about agroforestry and how to implement it on their land – securing a future that includes a healthy ecosystem, wider crop diversity and higher income.
In October 2018, Hurricane Michael passed directly over Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City, Florida. The Category 5 hurricane caused extensive wind and water damage, including 12,000 acres of mature Scots pine that snapped in half. While funds were available to clean up after severe storm damage, support is needed to replace the trees and ensure a healthy, forested future for this country.
The health of our waterways often begins with forested watersheds. In Georgia, we work with The Nature Conservancy and several other local partners to improve tree cover in four areas of the state, protect waterway health, and provide critical habitat for local wildlife.

In addition to supporting coral reef health, Haiti’s mangroves help stabilize coastlines, improve water quality, and provide habitat for fish and other coastal life. In partnership with Eden’s reforestation projects, we will help restore mangrove trees in coastal wetland systems in southern Haiti.
We are working with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to replant several state forests in Michigan on a large scale. These efforts will replant native tree species to return the area to its natural state and improve the health of the area’s watershed. Pine forests will grow to provide habitat for the endangered Kirtland’s Warbler and other wildlife.
Over the years, mountain pine beetle outbreaks have severely damaged the forest stand in the Ambrose Saddle area of the Bitterroot National Forest. Reforesting the area with a mix of tree species will promote insect and disease resistance, restore wildlife habitat, reduce soil erosion and return the area to its original forested state.

Large forest fires have ravaged this forest since 2000, and a large part of the forest cover is trying to regenerate itself due to the intensity of the fires. Tree planting efforts will accelerate the restoration of forest habitat for the area’s wildlife, as well as improve the health of the area’s watershed.
Fires, bark beetles, and root diseases have caused widespread tree mortality in Montana’s Kootenai and Flathead National Forests. This project will replant the area with trees resistant to all three of these problems. This will restore critical wildlife habitats and ensure forests are more resilient for years to come.
The rugged landscape of the Pine Ridge District of the Nebraska National Forest is a treat amidst the central plains. However, in 2006 and again in 2012, catastrophic fires swept through this national forest, destroying many Ponderosa pine stands in the area. Aggressive reforestation is needed to restore this tree species in areas of high fire intensity that are not capable of natural regeneration.

To support small farming families in Nicaragua, the Arbor Day Foundation is partnering with Taking Root through the CommuniTrees program. Together, we help build financial security and sustainable livelihoods—along with a stronger tree canopy—by reforesting previously underutilized land.
In September 2018, North Carolina was hit by Hurricane Florence. Along with that came the flooding of the Cape Fear River, which destroyed young forest trees in the Bladen Lakes State Forest. This project will replant flood-affected forest areas, restore critical wildlife habitat and ensure that new forest plantings withstand potential future flooding.
In 2017, the Chetco Bar Fire burned more than 170,000 acres of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, resulting in limited opportunity for successful natural regeneration. This replanting work is essential to ensure a resilient tree line and habitat for wildlife.

The iconic Willamette River is 187 miles long, drains 11,478 square miles (12% of Oregon’s land area), and serves as a major tributary of the Columbia River. Tree planting efforts here will protect the watershed, which is home to two-thirds of Oregon’s population and generates 75% of its economic output. This project will restore forests to provide clean drinking water for residents, as well as improve water quality and habitat for the wildlife that depend on the area.
The longleaf pine ecosystem supports a wide variety of plant and animal species, many of which depend exclusively on this type of habitat. Over time, however, the longleaf pine forests dwindled. In South Carolina, reforestation efforts are underway to restore longleaf pine stands and support rare wildlife, including the gopher tortoise and red woodpecker.
Longleaf pine forests are disappearing in the southeastern US at an alarming rate, leading to a decline in the quality of the area’s watersheds and wildlife habitat. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is working to restore these trees on both public and private lands.

The Rappahannock River watershed covers 2,700 square miles. There are thousands of miles of stream in this area without riparian buffers and they suffer from high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Watersheds face additional challenges due to urban development. Trees should be planted to prevent erosion, provide habitat for wildlife and reduce water pollution levels.
We work with the Washington Department of Natural Resources to improve the overall health of forests throughout Washington State. Afforestation efforts are focused on ensuring forest resilience for areas affected by disease and insect damage, restoring riparian zones, improving habitat for the endangered barn owl, and ensuring healthy and diverse stands of mixed species.
Burundi is one of the poorest and most deforested countries in the world – with a vicious cycle of ever-increasing poverty, deforestation and land degradation. In addition to setting up nurseries and planting trees, this project seeks to break the cycle of education. Farmers can learn about sustainable agriculture and the benefits of trees for their families and their communities.

The Great Green Wall is a new stretch of trees planted in Africa’s Sahel, one of the world’s poorest regions. It aims to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land and combat the area’s growing desertification, drought and food shortages. When completed, it will improve the lives of millions of Africans for generations to come.
Kenya’s Kijabe Forest has historically been one of five nationally significant water towers in Kenya, providing an estimated 75 percent of the country’s water resources. However, over the past 15 years the forest has been cleared for charcoal and timber, with dramatic and detrimental impacts on wildlife, infrastructure and quality of life. The goal to plant 1.5 million trees will help restore sustainable water supplies by protecting and replanting around springs and rivers. These trees will also restore habitat for wildlife, stabilize steep slopes prone to landslides and provide livelihoods.
In coastal areas of Madagascar, mangroves are critical. As mangrove deforestation increases, these areas face destabilized coastlines and increased vulnerability to storms and adverse weather events. We are working to strategically restore mangroves along Madagascar’s coast to help preserve this unique ecosystem.

Our partnership with the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha and the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership aims to reverse the destruction of the forest habitat that is home to critically endangered lemurs and other wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. Plant trees
