Washers and dryers – and how they work – can vary widely, but knowing a few general rules can help you get the most out of them.
There are three features – cycle length, cycle speed and water temperature – that can help you better understand your washing machine’s settings and how they affect your laundry. Note, however, that some machines have these functions separate from each other, allowing for greater control and customization of your wash, while others link cycle length, speed setting, and water temperature.
The cycle length (sometimes simply called the “timer”) is the time it takes the machine to clean your clothes. Use shorter cycles for lightly soiled and delicate items and longer cycles for heavily soiled and large items. Always choose the shortest possible cycle to get the job done; the less time the clothes spin during the wash, the longer they will last.

Cycle speed refers to the speed and force with which clothes are shaken in the wash and spin cycles. Cycle speed is sometimes expressed in terms such as “regular”, “permanent print” or “smooth”. This roughly means: “fast/fast”, “fast/slow” or “slow/slow”. Regular cycle, in which the wash cycle, when water and detergent are added to the drum, and the spin cycle, which removes water from the clothes after rinsing, are fast. It is the right choice for large items. The permanent press is a fast/slow cycle, meaning the wash cycle is fast and the spin cycle is slow, making it a good choice for fabrics that wrinkle easily, as the slower spin cycle reduces wrinkling. It is the right choice for most of your laundry. A delicate cycle is a slow/slow cycle and a cycle that should be used for delicate or delicate fabrics or items with embellishments. Then there’s the water temperature. When choosing the right water temperature for your load of laundry, keep these three things in mind:
But maybe you’ve been using hot water all your white laundry and old habits die hard. Or maybe you’re still worried about the germs and bacteria that survive in the cold? By all means, keep using warm water! If washing towels in hot water makes you feel better even though they look clean in cold water, go ahead. (For the record, the heat from the dryer will wash away the germs.) I did this knowing it was just a psychological comfort and not a decision based on facts. Doing laundry is personal and we don’t have to make the same decisions or feelings.
You may be guilty of drying your laundry too much. This can result in fading, shrinking, tearing or worse. But if you can break this habit, your clothes will last longer.
But don’t internalize this blame on the dryer: the problem with overdrying is the way the dryer settings are labeled, not your washing skills. So go ahead and blame the engine. Then check out this breakdown of what the most common dryer settings really mean so you can make a better, more informed dryer choice, settings labels be damned.

Normal: The highest heat setting, best used only for heavy items such as jeans, sweaters, and towels. “Regular” is a bad word for this setting because it shouldn’t be used regularly.
Permanent pressing: medium heat setting, with a final cooling period designed to reduce wrinkles. This is what you want for most of your clothes and sheets.
Smooth: A low heat setting, sometimes referred to as “dry low heat.” Use it on items that contain spandex or other forms of stretch, as well as delicate cottons and materials that shrink easily, such as wool and linen. Low heat drying is also great for clothes that retain their scent after washing, such as yoga pants or sweat-resistant shirts.
Tumble Dry: No heat setting, sometimes called “no heat” or “air dry”. It can be used in place of the delicate setting for delicate fabrics or items that tend to shrink, or for garments with embellishments that may melt or curl when exposed to heat.

Washing machine cleaning depends on how and how often the machine is used; a single professional woman who does her laundry once a week does not need to clean her machine as often as a father who changes his child’s diaper.
How To Do Laundry Without Ruining Your Clothes
The washing machine cleaning process is quite simple: use hot water and detergent instead of detergent to rinse the washing machine. A toothbrush is also useful for removing accumulated product from the dispenser. Commercial dishwasher cleaners from brands like Tide and Carbona exist, but you don’t need a specific product to do the job—white vinegar is a great choice, as is baking soda. If you have a front-loading machine, wipe the seal after the cleaning cycle to prevent product build-up and mold growth.
Talk about a gasket! If you have a high efficiency (HE) washing machine, it will probably develop a musty smell. To prevent this, leave the door slightly open when the machine is not in use to allow air to circulate and help dry the machine. When the smell starts to appear, use a cloth and white vinegar (squeeze it so it’s damp but not dripping) to clean the seal of any remaining moisture, detergent residue, and mold that has developed from the combination of the two. If you are a very diligent person, add weekly or monthly
