In the latest move to promote diversity among themselves and within the film industry, the film school on Tuesday announced a new set of film screenings to compete for best picture.
The Oscars Awards Order
Created a few months ago by a special task force as part of Academy Aperture 2025, the criteria include on-screen representation – in the form of stories told by participants – and behind-the-scenes of employees and the inclusion- together with the companies involved.

To be eligible for best picture, a film must meet at least two criteria in four categories: “Screen Representation, Themes and Story,” “Creative Leadership and Teamwork,” “Reach and Opportunity in the Industry” and “Audience Growth.” .” Within each group there are different ways to include people in underrepresented groups, including women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people and those with mental or physical disabilities. (The other Oscar categories won’t have the same criteria, but best picture contenders will filter through the other length categories.)
In the past, the only criteria to qualify for best picture were the film’s running time (more than 40 minutes) and the details of how, where and when it was shown to the public.
The new standards will not end until 96 Oscars in 2024. But at the time of counting all the races in Hollywood and in the world, the school believes that the requirements provide a map of how the industry can ensure that at least . The films competing for the top award reflect the diversity of moviegoers and the rest of the world.

“The field needs to be expanded to reflect the global population of filmmakers and the people who interact with them,” Academy President David Rubin and Chief Executive Dawn Hudson said in a statement. “The Academy is committed to playing an important role in making this happen. We believe this merger will be a catalyst for long-term, important change in our industry.”
The new standards were created by a team led by school governors DeVon Franklin and Jim Gianopulos, using a template inspired by the British Film Institute Diversity Standards that govern eligibility in other categories of the BAFTAs and in partnership with the Producers Guild of America.
Among the new standards, what is represented in the images is worth paying attention to. Indeed, some of the recent nominees featuring mostly white, male actors — including the World War I film “1917” and the crime drama “The Irishman” — may have trouble meeting those new standard. These criteria require one of the following: at least one of the directors or major contributors comes from an underrepresented race or ethnicity; at least 30% of secondary and minor players come from underrepresented groups; or a major issue, topic or issue centered on an underrepresented group.
How Does A Film Qualify For The Best Picture Oscar?
Considering the difficulties of insistence that can be heavy on the kinds of stories that are considered well thought out in pictures, however, the school makes the flexibility of films to meet the needs of inclusion in other areas . For example, films may meet the “Access to Industry and Opportunities” criteria if the studio or production company offers paid training opportunities as well as training and education opportunities for underrepresented group in various sectors, common across industries.
In recent years, the academy has announced several changes — including plans for a special “most popular movie” category and splitting some award categories from the televised Oscars — only to withdraw those this after criticism that they were not accepted. and half cooked. But by announcing its new incorporation requirements three years before they take effect, the school is giving companies more time to adapt. (For the 2022 and 2023 Oscars, potential best picture nominees will be required to submit a confidential Academy Inclusion Criteria form but will not be kept in other areas of inclusion.)
Announced in June, the Academy’s Aperture 2025 project marks the next chapter in the academy’s diverse efforts that began in response to two consecutive years of #OscarsSoWhite. The project aims to promote greater representation in management, membership and workplace culture of the organization, as well as in films nominated for the Oscars. In June, the organization announced that it had surpassed the goal, set at the beginning of 2016, of doubling the number of women and people from underrepresented tribes/ethnicities in the group by 2020.
