Korean Boy Names

This is one of our defining questions, and it intrigues me. Are names usually gender specific? Are there any common forms/variations to indicate specific genders?

Boy Names That Start With J (with Meanings, Origins)

To preface my answer, let me first say that I am not. I lived in Korea for 2 years and graduated, but I’m not clear about all the naming conventions used in Korea. Just my personal observations as a non-linguist.

Korean Boy Names

Although there is no definite pattern to naming that I know of, there are sure indicators that a name is “male” or “female.”

For example, you are unlikely to find the character 용/룡 (meaning dragon) in a girl’s name. Similarly, you are unlikely to find the character 미 (beauty) in a boy’s name.

Popular Korean Boy Names (and Meanings)

For me (before, I lived in Korea for a few years; now, I work in the US and still interact with people in general), there are some simple rules I use to determine whether a name is feminine or masculine.

There is no exact science to this. I liken it to hearing the name “Butch” and thinking it’s male, or hearing the name “Laurel” and thinking it’s female. No one sat me down and told me that “Butch” was a male name; It seems fair to say that it is a masculine name. Learning to identify the “gender” of a name is an organic and natural part of learning for me.

Some common wild card characters are 상 (sang), 성 (seong), 영 (yong), and 진 (jin). Both boys and girls have names that use these characters.

As in English, you will sometimes hear masculine names with feminine sounds and vice versa. But using these basic rules, I was able to be very accurate in guessing gender from their name alone. It also helps that they aren’t always inventive in naming their children. I know five women named 김민정.

Korean Boy Names

Since some of the letters in the above list have multiple meanings, I have not included the meanings. However, knowing the meaning(s) of a character is helpful. For example 용/룡 vs. See my explanation in 미. Girls don’t want to look like a dragon, men don’t want to be beautiful.

Another little trick I’ve noticed is that giving your daughter a pure/native name has become a trend lately. By this I mean names without Chinese characters (Hamsa) attached. While this is theoretically possible for boys, the practice is more common for girls. Notable examples include names such as 나리 (nari: lily), 소라 (sora: sea shell), 아리 (aram: beauty), 이슬 (isul: snow), and 현터 (hanul: sky or heaven).

Of course to use this trick, you need to be able to recognize local words and Sino words, which is definitely not a task for beginners. To make it more difficult, some girls have 은별 (eun-byeol: eun [Chinese part] usually means “silver” or “kindness/kindness” and byeol [part] means “star”).

As far as I understand, the South Korean government has restrictions on which characters (한자 [hamsa]) can be used in names. The list is huge, but puts some restrictions on which characters you’ll meet. Also, since these letters can form real everyday words, some combinations are not used in practice. Although the name 철도 uses valid and accepted characters, it is not a name that many people are likely to use (it means “railroad”, making it an odd name).

In closing, I should also add that there are many names that are legally unisex. Think Taylor or Jesse/Jesse (at least in the US) in English. Some examples are 자경 (ja-kyong) and 영진 (yong-jin). I know both men and women have these names.

But women’s names are much less common than men’s. Female nouns end in a vowel or end in a soft sound. The hansa (Chinese characters) in female names indicate beauty (美 RIFE 다울 미, 姸 고울 연, 淑 安全 숙) or value of a woman (禮 예 예 짙).
