It may seem unbelievable that the “Christmas Creep” starts right before Halloween, but the real Christmas season starts on Christmas Day itself. That’s right: December 25 marks the official start of the 12 days of Christmas, the Christian tradition that shares its name with the Christmas carol.
The 12 days of Christmas are the period of Christian theology that indicates between the birth of Christ and the arrival of the Magi, the three wise men. It starts on 25th December (Christmas) and lasts until 6th January (Episode, sometimes called Epiphany). Advent is the name for the four weeks before Christmas, which starts four Sundays before Christmas and ends on December 24.
Some families choose to mark the 12-day period by observing the feast days of various saints (including St. Stephen on December 26) and planning daily Christmas-related activities, but for many, things become back to business as usual after December 25.

“12 Days of Christmas” is also a Christmas song where the singer brags about all the cool gifts they got from their “true love” during the 12 days of Christmas. Each verse builds on the previous one, serving as a really effective way to annoy family members on road trips.
On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave me a frozen pear tree.
The hymn then adds a gift each day, building on the previous verse, until you read all 12 gifts:
What Are The 12 Days Of Christmas?
The history of the carol is somewhat unclear. The first known version first appeared in a children’s book in 1780 of the name
. (A first edition of that book sold for $23,750 at a Sotheby’s auction in 2014, but you can also buy a digital copy on Amazon.) Some historians think the song is French in origin, but most agree that was designed as A “memory and loss” game, where the singers tested their ability to remember words and had to reward their opponents with “khafis” – a kiss or something – if they made a mistake.
Many variations of the term existed in different areas. Some speak of “bers a-baiting” or “ships a-sailing”; Some name the singer’s mother as a gift giver rather than their true love. Early versions list four “colly” birds, an ancient word meaning black as coal (a black bird, in other words). Some people think that the five golden rings actually refer to the marks on the neck, which would correspond to the bird of the previous verses.
The Twelve Days Of Christmas: What Do They Stand For?
However, the song we mostly know today comes from an English composer called Frederic Austin; In 1909, he set the melody and lyrics (including the change from “colly” to “call”) and added as it evolved, the emerging evidence of “five rings.”
A popular theory in internet circles is that the words “The 12 Days of Christmas” are a reference to Christianity; it corresponds to the fact that the song was written to help Christians learn and communicate the doctrine of their faith while avoiding persecution. Under that theory, the various gifts break down as follows, as the myth-busting website Snopes explains:
2 Doves = Old Testament and the New 3 French Chickens = Faith, Hope and Charity, Goodness 4 Calling Birds = The Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists 5 Gold = Five Books of the Old Testament, the Pentateuch, “which” n tell the story Man’s grace fell 6 Geese A-laying = six days of creation 7 Swans A-swimming = seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments Women dancing = nine fruits of the Holy Spirit 10 Lord A-leaping = the Ten Order
Days Of Christmas At The Classic
This theory seems to be organized around the chain email circuit, but it really doesn’t make much sense when you examine it. Snopes has a great explanation of many, many potential pitfalls. The most common: First, the gifts of the song have nothing to do with their Christian “equivalence”, so the song is basically useless for remembering the important pillars of the faith. Secondly, if Christians were so restricted from practicing their faith that they had to hide the messages of the song, they would also not be able to celebrate Christmas in the first place – just sing Christmas carols.
The late historian William Studwell, known for his expertise in Christmas carols, also refuted the concept of a coded message. As he told Religion News Service in 2008:
This was not originally a Catholic hymn, despite what you hear on the internet. … Neutral directories say this is nonsense. If there is such a pleading catechism, a secret code, it is taken from the original secular hymn. It is a derivative, not a source.

Sorry to spoil your dinner party with a fun fact; While I’m at it, I might as well tell you that “Ring Around the Rosie” isn’t about the black plague, either.
To calculate the cost of all the gifts in the “12 days of Christmas”, we will turn to the PNC financial services group’s annual Christmas Price Index, which PNC has presented since 1984; calculates the value of all the gifts in the song according to the current market price. At the current pace of inflation, the gift-giving smorgasbord is more expensive this year: The total for 2022 comes to $45,523.27, up 10.5 percent from the 2021 price, or $197,071.09 if you count any item-specific mentions (which will be totaling 364 donations) – an increase of 9.8 per cent on last year.
Rising prices for items like jewelry and fertilizer mean five rings ($1,245, up 39 percent) and the famous pear tree ($280.18, nearly 26 percent) are more expensive than ever. However, some things haven’t changed at all – as the index points out, the federal minimum wage hasn’t increased since 2009, meaning the rate of eight milkmaids has consistently earned a relative $58 .
How To Set Up A
Regardless of the price, however, giving someone all these things is probably not a good idea; Think of all the birds.
The structure of “The 12 Days of Christmas” lends itself well to parodies, of which there have been many. There’s a red version of Jeff Foxworthy, the heavy metal version on The Crooked Sister, and, of course, the Muppets version (featuring John Denver):
Others have tried to interpret the 12 days of Christmas as a meal, with dishes such as scrambled eggs representing the geese etc. Then there’s the “12 Days of Christmas Diet,” which Olga Khazan of The Atlantic put to the test in 2013. She calculated the calories in a serving of each bird mentioned in the song and subtracted the calories burned from various activities ( milk, jumping, etc.) . It seems that whole chickens are somehow less popular than American holiday food. She summed it up:

If you ate all the birds in one day, including the pheasant pie, but not including all the trimmings in the other dishes, and took away the energy you spent on milk, dancing, jumping, and drumming, you would eat 2,384 net calories .Ah. That’s not too bad, considering the average American Thanksgiving dinner adds up to 4,500 calories.
It even seems reasonable, so to speak, when you consider that if you want to burn your food while singing its name song, you have to do the whole singing process about 300 times – about 17.5 hours of caroling. . And that’s a gift I doubt anyone will welcome.
