Korean Girl Names – One of the most interesting and difficult aspects is when the girl is choosing her name. Parents understand that what they choose will become part of her character and shape her character and personality. Therefore, it is important to choose a name that feels appropriate and meaningful. Among the many options for names are Korean female names, which have become popular in the modern world.
Why should you consider Korean girl names? For some people, choosing them is an important part of their culture. Others prefer less conventional options that sound better and have better ideas. Before choosing one, you need to know the style and decide if it reflects the values and style you want your daughter to see.
Korean Girl Names
Korean names usually start with the last name followed by the personal name. Usually, a name consists of three syllables. A family or surname usually has one syllable, is inherited patrilineally, and is shared between siblings. A given name or personal name consisting of two syllables can be written together and separated by a hyphen.

This is one of our defining questions and I love mine. Common names based on gender? Are there common/unique characters used to describe men?
Real Names Of Our Fave Korean Drama Actresses
To preface my answer, let me first say that I am not myself. I lived in Korea for 2 years and graduated in , but I don’t know all the naming conventions used in Korea. These are just my personal experiences as a non-citizen.
While there is no specific method for naming that I am aware of, there are indications that it is either “male” or “female”.
For example, you might not see the form 용/룡 (meaning dragon) in a girl’s name. Likewise, you might not see the 미 (handsome) character in a boy’s name.
Korean Girl Names (and Their Meanings)
For me (I lived in Korea for a few years; now I work in the US while still talking with s), there are a few basic rules I use to determine whether a person is female or male, perhaps the name.
There is no exact science for this. I would compare it to hearing the name “Butch” and thinking it’s masculine, or hearing the name “Laurel” and thinking it’s feminine. Nobody ever sat down and told me that “Butch” was a boy’s name; It is “appropriate” to say that it is a masculine name. Learning to recognize the “gender” of a name is a natural, natural part of me.
상 (sang), 성 (seong), 영 (yeong) and 진 (jin) are some of the most common wildcard images. There are boy and girl names using these words.

Just like in English, you will sometimes hear men with feminine sounding names and vice versa. But using these basic rules, I was able to correctly select the gender with just the name. It also helps that she doesn’t always think about naming her children. I know you about five women named 김민정.
As there are too many comments for some of the words in the above list, I have not included the comments. However, knowing how to behave can help. See my explanation of 용/룡 versus 미. Girls don’t look like dragons and men don’t want to be seen as beautiful.
Another little trick I discovered recently is to make it a habit to give your daughter a clean name. By this I am referring to names that do not have a Chinese word (hanja) associated with them. While it is conceivable for boys, this behavior is more common in girls. Names like 나리 (nari: lily), 소라 (sora: seashell), 아리 (arum: beauty), 이슬 (isul: dew) and 하다 (hanul: sky or sky) are examples.

To use this trick, you need to know real words with bell words, which is not a task for beginners. To make things more complicated, some girls have combined names, like 은별 (eun-byeol: eun [Chinese part] usually means “money” or “love/love” and byeol [the part] is a “star”).
As I understand it, the South Korean government limits the number of words (think 한자 [hanja]) that can be used in names. The list is quite large, however it does place some limitations on what you should be familiar with. Also, although these words can form real everyday words, some combinations are not used in practice. Although the name 철도 uses appropriate and acceptable words, it is not a name that people easily use (because it means “railway”, which is another name).
Finally, I need to add some names that are properly unisex. Think Taylor or Jessie/Jesse in English (at least in the US). Some examples are 자경 (ja-kyeong) and 영진 (yeong-jin). I know men and women who have these names.

But female names are less common than male names. Female names that end in a vowel or end in soft sounds. Hanja (Chinese characters) in female names indicate beauty (美 아다다울 미, 姸 고울 연, 淑 마을 숙) or female wealth (禮 예 예, 智지).
Here are the top 25 Hanja used in female names from erumy.com. There are two columns for calculating the Hanja for the first word in order of frequency and the second for the second word in the name.
Male names, on the other hand, have Hanja as their length (e.g. 龍용 dragon), but there are more variations and smaller patterns. Same table for male Hanja.
