Safest Laundry Detergents – Finding the best non-toxic laundry detergent took two years and a lot of trial and error, but keep that in mind! This version is affordable, smells great (or you can get it fragrance-free), uses less plastic, and is made in the USA. Easily cleans even our very dirty agricultural laundry. Miracles around!
Laundry is hard to find. With so much marketing it’s really hard to know what’s safe to use – I thought everything was safe for years.
Safest Laundry Detergents
I’ve been buying Drift for my kids and Tidy and Down for decades. We were hooked on the scent, loved the wrapping papers they smelled as good as advertised and kept their scent in the linen closet for weeks.
Laundry Detergent Hypoallergenic & Fragrance Free
As a nurse, I loved using disinfectant wipes to clean the germs off my hospital gowns.
It wasn’t until I developed my own crippling autoimmune disease that I learned that what we put on our skin, including laundry detergent and fabric softener, play a huge role in the toxic load our bodies filter out each day.
The laundry detergent itself isn’t the death of you. Please don’t get me wrong. But when you combine it with the many other unhealthy products we come into contact with every day, it adds up.
Basic laundry detergents are not soaps. They are a blend of chemicals designed to remove dirt from clothes. Some of the more common ingredients include:

Many major brands are green — or labeled — to make you think they’re safe, when in fact they contain a variety of chemicals that carry significant risks of developmental and reproductive harm, cancer, asthma, and skin irritation.
I like to check the safety of my products through the Environmental Working Group (EWG) website and their cursory database. You will be shocked to find brands with poor safety ratings, which include brands such as:
They’re on the list for many different reasons—not all are exactly alike, so be sure to research your favorite brands. Sometimes I find that the search function on their site doesn’t work properly, so I’ve had better luck googling “XYZ (enter your brand name) EWG rating” and finding products that way.
After a few months off Downey’s, I sat down for a bit and thought about using it on my sheets. I put them on the bed and that night my husband fell asleep and passed out a few minutes later. He was barely breathing through his nose.

So I’m not kidding. I’ve forgotten many brands over the last couple of years, but here’s the main attraction:
DIY: I’ve been making a liquid version with Fels Naptha soap and borax for a few years. It wasn’t terrible, but it did require me to keep a five-gallon bucket in my laundry room, and the whites were really dirty and gray after a while. I always ended up coming back to Tide.
Molly’s Suds: This one just lacks the power for our filth. Most of the time, I took my shirts out of the washer so I could still see and smell the deodorant on my arms. It just wasn’t for us.
Branch Basics: Full disclosure, I love BBs for whites and do a lot of cleaning here at home with their delicious concentrate, but it’s quite expensive. The concentrate, empty laundry bottle, and oxygen booster cost $65, but they last a long time, and your whites have never been cleaner, so it’s not a total loss.
Amazon.com: Pure Selects Liquid Laundry Detergent Concentrate • 4 Pack • Dilutes To Make 4 1/2 Gallons • Up To 576 Loads Of Pure Clean • Hypoallergenic • Safe For Sensitive Skin
7th Generation: I’ve been using it the longest, but I can’t really say I love it. Whites aren’t very clean and require pretreatment to remove grease or grass stains. All in all it’s… fair. It’s also expensive for the larger bottles, which cost over $20 each.
Thieves Laundry Detergent (Young Living): You have to take out a mortgage to buy this stuff or sell the oils to people to get enough discount to make it affordable. At $45 to $50 a bottle, I couldn’t bear the expense of remembering whether or not I liked it. Plus, it’s so expensive that people have developed “hacks” to stretch it and make it last longer. I have total love for Thieves cleaner, but laundry detergent and dish soap just aren’t my thing.
There should be a rule that anything considered safe or clean must smell like lavender or eucalyptus. I do not want this. I want clothes that smell like the tide without chemicals. Please.
I don’t mind being so fragrance-free these days, and the nontoxic laundry care I’ve finally discovered and love comes with a naturally scented or fragrance-free soap scent. Lavender has no smell and I don’t need essential oils to pretend my clothes smell good.
Tide Free And Gentle Liquid Laundry Detergent
It’s really free. Made in Michigan, this company offers great smell, convenience, less plastic packaging to throw away, and support for those who need it with every purchase.
The good clean smell of the laundry was like a holy grail which I was very happy to discover. Your clothes will still smell good, but they will no longer smell after drying. If you would like fabric softener to further improve the smell and softness, it is also available for purchase. Even the characteristic scent is of natural origin. Synthetic fragrances are not allowed.
Most products come with a lifetime can or container. And I can tell from experience that they really last. This means you can only buy small quantities of filler powders or liquids and save a ton on plastic waste.
I’ve never seen more sales in my entire life than them. Just this week I got 300 free loads of laundry and only spent $99 on the entire order. No subscription required! When they do bundle sales on all of their products, I get extra!
Molly’s Suds Super Powder Laundry Detergent With Enzymes • Eela
Made in Michigan, truly free product purchases go towards food and supplies for orphanages in Haiti, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. And the fabric around each drying angel is sewn by a female survivor of human trafficking. They have a hand in many good works!
The first time I used it, I was a little disappointed. I mixed the powder with hot water in a pot, shook it and poured it into a cup, then put it in the washing machine like any liquid. My washing machine doesn’t have a soap dispenser so when I put it in it was drenched in dry clothes and felt like the load didn’t get clean.
After that I learned to put the whole cup in the washing machine and the detergent would dissolve evenly with the water so it wouldn’t sit on one towel, get wet, and never reach another.
I also mix mine a little harder than the bottle suggests and wash in hot water for some stubborn problems.
Prōtëkt® Probiotic Laundry Detergent • Protekt Worldwide
Truly free makes it easy to try anything! Check out their small, medium and large linen packages here. I find enzyme stain remover to be great for getting blood out of clothes.
And the stain stick is great for easy cleaning of grease or small tasks. I also have a dryer angel and laundry detergent to make sure my washing machine is tidy without added chemicals.
Are you ready to try? You have nothing to lose but a lot of chemicals in your clothes. I know transitioning is hard when we get so stuck in our habits, but I know you can make this change for you and your family.
