According to Forbes, the combined wealth of super-rich Americans fell by $500 billion, or 11 percent, to $4 trillion. The Forbes list is based on stock prices as of September 2.
The fortunes of most of Wisconsin’s billionaires have increased recently, Forbes reports, but recent changes in the stock market may also affect Wisconsin’s wealthiest residents.
Herbert Kohler Jr., who died in 2022, recently lost a member of the 2022 Forbes list of Wisconsin billionaires. Kohler used to be the Badger State’s third-richest person.

“The rich don’t always get richer,” said Chase Peterson-Whithorn, deputy editor of Forbes magazine, noting that like many Americans, the nation’s 400 richest people are feeling the stock market slump.
“But they just do it,” he said. As a group, they are a trillion dollars richer than they were in 2019, before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Elon Musk, who founded six companies, including electric car maker Tesla and rocket maker Space X, topped the list of America’s super-rich for the first time on Thursday with a fortune of $263.2 billion. That’s an increase from $251 billion since September 2.

He displaced Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who had topped the list for four years. At the time of listing, Bezos was worth $141.4 billion, up from $151 billion.
Facebook founder and Meta Platforms co-founder Mark Zuckerberg entered the top 10, rising from third place last year to 11th. Its real-time net worth was $51.2 billion on Thursday, down from $57.7 billion at the time of listing.
Since September 2021, Zuckerberg has lost more than half of his fortune, or $76.8 billion, according to Forbes. Over the past year, no one from the Forbes 400 lost more money than Zuckerberg, the financial publication reports.
