What is considered “luxury” is different now than it used to be – but it has always been about conspicuous displays of wealth and consumption.

) sorted by nationality, size and hair color serving drinks, not rough house help. There is high sustainability in this type of consumption. In the 19th century, for example, there were tall footmen befitting the nobility and the Victorians loved many multi-course feasts.

In the mid-19th century, wealth from new industries created great wealth at a time when taxes and labor costs were low. North Americans have become the richest people in the world. Claire Booth Luce, formerly married to the chairman of Time-Life, said, “In America, money is something that is less valuable for spending than it is for earning. It is less a symbol of luxury than ‘success’, less corruption than virtue.”
While Americans are good at making money, they seem to need Europeans to spend it. The raft of wealthy American women who began marrying into the European aristocracy in the late 19th century became known as “dollar princesses,” a term derived from a popular song. The British aristocracy, of course, married into this American wealth. Between 1890 and 1914, half of the world’s capital passed through London. Dollar princesses pay for extensive renovations and upgrades to beautiful homes, pose for photos with huge suitcases as they move across the Atlantic, and patronize expensive jewelers, couturiers, florists and caterers.
The arrival of wealthy American heirs coincided with a series of challenges to the British aristocracy, including the introduction of death duties, income tax increases and the Great Riots of 1912.

Between the end of the 19th century and the start of World War I, luxury was widely reported and commented on in diaries and memoirs. The much-publicized house parties are characterized by lavish meals of great refinement, expensive flowers, and a large number of visible servants.

This was a period when rich women were full of jewels: Kenneth Clark, an art historian, noted at a party in New York in the 1930s that women “even carried jewels in their hands and placed them on the dinner table. It could have happened in the Middle Ages.”

Mrs. Greville, one of the richest women in England (daughter of a Scottish brewer), loved her jewelry, owning pieces that can be traced back to Marie Antoinette and the Empress Josephine. The late Queen Mother, a lover of luxury and a consummate Edwardian figure, inherited the precious jewels from Mrs Greville in 1942, a friend from her days as the Duchess of York. But as Elizabeth wrote in her diaries, she wore expensive Cartier and Boucheron pieces until 1947, so as not to be seen as “out of step” with the post-war austerity movement. Debauched luxury runs the risk of being out of line with public morality. The Queen Mother wore all of Mrs Greville’s jewels to celebrate her 80th birthday – and now Camilla, the Queen Consort, owns them. As Camilla is the granddaughter of Mrs Keppel, Edward VII’s mistress, the story takes a twist. In the 1940s Mrs Greville left an estate worth approximately £39 million or 797 million rand.
This is not a lot of money compared to the wealth that billionaires hold in the world today. Gina Reinhart is worth between 28.8 and 31.4 billion Australian dollars. Today, luxury is seen as an embodiment of growing income inequality within countries and communities, as well as between different countries of the world. This is not new, despite the past luxury and inequality seen as part of the structure of a hierarchical society: to be recognized rather than a problem.

When societies aim for income and social equality (as some post-war societies did), luxury—or at least public talk of luxury—seems to disappear.
