How To Make Spoon Jewlery

How To Make Spoon Jewlery – 9 years ago (!) I shared a tutorial on how to make your own spoon rings. They were inspired by the rings my mother made when I was young. I found some more silver last year and wanted to update the tutorial a bit and add a video so people can follow along!

Sterling silver is a little harder to find now than it used to be, at least for me. But I keep my eyes peeled for thrift stores, estate sales, and flea markets. But you can also check out eBay, Etsy, and antique stores so you can search and find a piece with the perfect little design you want. There are some very complicated and beautiful options! And while I appreciate a beautiful old spoon, it is much prettier as a ring.

These DIY scissor rings are pretty easy to make and we made them without any special jewelry tools. Spoon rings have been popular for many years and are a great way to turn old cutlery or family heirlooms into beautiful rings.

Cutlery rings are generally thought to have originated in 17th century England when people started making rings out of cutlery. Legend has it that they stole pieces of silver from their master’s house and made a ring out of it to give to their loved ones because they couldn’t afford a royal wedding band.

I have to credit my son, Nate, for this post, he is exceptionally talented when it comes to art, one day I will have to share his drawings, ceramics, papier mache and more. He started making these bits for his friends, did I mention he also has the biggest heart ever. I was so impressed that I asked him to show me how, it was super fun to watch him work his magic!

While we were making the rings, I realized that I still have my little spoon that my mom saved for me. I’m so tempted to turn it into a ring but at the same time I just want to keep it the way it is. I think this might be an emotional DIY project for some if you are working with silverware from parents or grandparents.

I still have all my mother’s jewelry which has yet to be divided among my siblings. Every piece I remember what I was wearing and I remember a story behind the piece. As a child, I was always in awe of her wedding ring, so many beautiful memories.

First of all, you want to make sure that you are using the right type of silver spoons. These special spoons were found at our local thrift stores and the San Diego Swap Center for $1 each. We usually go to a swap meet once every two months as a family and make a day of shopping and lunch. Searching for treasures is a lot of fun. You can also find antique spoons at garage sales, flea markets, or Etsy shops. When looking for your spoon, make sure it’s sterling silver by checking the stamp on the back. It should say .925 or sterling. Stainless steel is significantly harder than sterling silver and would be difficult to work with. You also want to look for a spoon that is on the thinner side, the thicker it is the harder it is to bend.

Cut the bowl and cut the spoon handle based on your tape/paper measurements. You can make the cuts with a hacksaw or put the spoon in the bench lathe and hammer it with your rubber mallet until it is fully bent, cut with your pliers.

Note: If you want to keep the end of the spoon (the handle) as part of your ring, just make a cut that fits your measurements.

File the sharp edges and cut the ends with a metal file or coarse sandpaper. You want a super smooth finish.

I recommend wrapping some kind of cloth around the drill bit and mallet to protect the metal from scratches. (I removed the fabric from the garment for photo purposes)

Insert the spoon and drill bit into the bench lathe. Use the rubber mallet and slowly bend it around the bit. Continue to repeat this process of beating and shaping the spoon around the piece.

I mean this whole process took us about 1 hour, if we had all the right tools we could have shaved off about 15 minutes, but really what we used worked fine.

Hands On Review: Vintage Spoon Jewelry

1. Get your supplies: spoon/fork; scissors; piece of paper; metal file; metal saw; (And not seen in the picture:) some spoon bending pliers.

2. Cut a strip of paper and fold it around your finger. Cut it to the size you want your ring to be.

3. Place the piece of paper next to the spoon/fork. Draw a line on the spoon/fork where you want it to cut.

Starting with this part, I was so excited about the end result that I forgot to take pictures. I’m so sorry!
