Does your shower head, which is so strong, feel like a half-full glass of wine? Does the surface look like a car covered in salt in the middle of winter? Personally, I will never forget the moment I looked up and realized that water was pouring out of me through a small pot ring. If any of these things sound familiar, it’s time to clean your shower head—but there are some important dos and don’ts to be aware of along the way.

Clogged Shower Head? Here’s A Quick Fix!
Sealing tape: This thin masking tape, also known as plumber’s tape, helps prevent water from escaping when you turn the shower head on the arm.

It depends on the level of hard water, how bad the shape is, and how the blockage is in the shower head. Expect to spend anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes actually cleaning. And if you are dealing with a dirty or closed type, expect about six to eight hours of waiting time when the water source is drinking water (so be sure to -take a bath first).
To keep your shower head running smoothly, Tom Sindelar, senior product manager for Kohler, recommends washing it regularly. “Quick cleaning, usually makes it look and work like new in less time,” he told us via email. This is wise advice, but obviously something that is easily dismissed as part of your routine. One of the master bathrooms we worked on hadn’t been cleaned in eight months.
How To Clean A Shower Head, Drain & Glass Doors
Before starting a shower head for a closed shower head, be aware that many modern models have silicone or polymer nozzles that are resistant to scale and are designed to remove hard water quickly. If clogging is the only problem, you can sometimes solve the problem by using your strong hand on the surface, or by working the nozzles back and forth a little.
“The water on my father’s side is very strong,” said author Tim Heffernan. “He thought he was going to have to replace all his shower heads, but I was able to clean them in a few minutes by scrubbing the nozzles with my fingernails. I pulled them to the side and left them let them go back a few times.”
If this does not solve the problem, or you have a model with fixed nozzles, start by putting the water head in the alcohol and water. Acidic alcohol will help break down mineral deposits inside and outside, and it will help remove mold and other growths commonly found in the bathroom.
Many cleaning blogs, articles and even some Wirecutter users recommend tying a bag of wine to the shower head to soak it. I tried this and found this method to be very difficult, although it may work well for small shower heads or kitchen sink drains.
How To Clean Your Shower Head Effortlessly!
For larger shower heads that fit in a quart or sandwich bag, I find that removing the shower head completely is easier and guarantees better cleaning. However, because not everyone can remove the shower head, we will cover both ways, starting with what we have to do first.
Use a detachable ring to secure the shower head under the arm. To remove external debris, run your hand or a soft cloth over the entire surface and remove any sealing tape that may be stuck to the internal threads.
Check the small screen and/or water barrier inside the shower head’s water inlet. Some small sticks can dissolve during the wine harvest. However, if there is any large debris, use a needle nose pliers to carefully remove the screen or gasket from the top of the water block. You can use a ruler to remove the hard gunk from the screen, but be careful: You don’t want to spread a small hole in the screen; which will allow large pieces of debris to enter. When finished, place the screen and/or gasket back into the shower head.
