What begins as a “Memories of Murder”-style police procedural veers into dark, wild territory in writer and director Na Hong-jin’s unsettling and at times stomach-churning horror thriller. Jong-gu (Kwak Do-won) is a policeman who investigates a series of gruesome murders influenced by the rumors surrounding him: “It all happened,” he says, “after the Japanese came.” When his family is drawn into the investigation, Jong-goo realizes what he can do—and then things happen.
The grueling 156-minute running time allows for leisurely turns to character drama and macabre humor, but the image never slows down; There is something sinister in the air of this village and Naa creates a sense of unshakable dread with restraint and power. (For more South Korean cinema, try “Burning.”)
When Joel and Ethan Coen followed up their Oscar-winning “Fargo,” a broad comedy about a gawky stoner, a botched kidnapping and a case of mistaken identity, audiences and critics were left scratching their heads in confusion. It was only when the film hit home video and cable that it began to gain a cult following, resonating with its idiosyncratic dialogue, prolific catchphrases, memorable characters and unique comic rhythm. Jeff Bridges is perfect as Jeff Lebowski, an easy-going, good-natured man who is mistaken for “The Big Lebowski”, a millionaire with a missing trophy wife. A yin-yang combination of rock, blowhard and wallflower as John Goodman and Steve Buscemi as bowling buddies. It’s one of the Coens’ more foreign films (which is saying something), but it deserves the dedication it inspires. (For more stoner comedy, try “This Is The End.”)
Best Psychological Thrillers On Netflix Right Now (october 2023)
Edgar Wright (“Baby Driver”) directs this quirky action/comedy with a zippy graphic novel aesthetic. Although based on a comic book series and filled with video-game-inspired sequences, viewers may not be familiar; Wright borrowed the genre’s high-energy visual language to tell his sweet story better and funnier. “Pilgrim” snaps and crackles, moving from one disarming set piece to the next with gusto and vitality; A.O. Scott praised his “quick, funny, fun-loving spirit”. And “Before They Were Stars” is a fantastic drama, with talented young actors (Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Mae Whitman, Alison Pill and many others) who just want to pop.
Director Sam Raimi (returning to his “Evil Dead” roots after completing the “Spider-Man” trilogy) opens this funny horror flick by replicating the Universal logo animation from the 1980s and “drag me to hell” is just that. From that era – when horror studios didn’t take themselves too seriously
