Last year my oldest son was obsessed with crazy lib. We bought book after book and finished them at dinner with blueberry lemon muffins for breakfast.
Now it’s even more fun for them to do together because they’re learning different parts of speech at school, so he actually knows what it means when I ask him for a verb or an adjective!

Mad libs is an activity that I think has been around for a long time. It just seems like a silly version of the idea of adding a lib (or improvisation) to me, but the kids love it.
The basic idea is that you have a fairly typical story, but there are gaps in the story, and these gaps need to be filled with words. When they are full of words, you read the story and it always turns out to be a funny story, where sometimes it makes no sense, but often it’s just funny.
Mad libs require at least two people and are even better with more. Choose one person to fill in the gaps in the story. Give them a printed story and a pen.

Then this person reads only the spaces (e.g. body part, color, adjective) to the other people playing. They take turns filling in the blank by saying what comes to mind from that blank.
Although the story is best read with the nose, for example, you can say the knees, and that creates madness.
Continue reading each blank and fill them in as the story progresses without the people saying the words seeing the story.

When all the blanks have been filled in, the person who filled in the blanks must read the story aloud to the group. Get ready for a few laughs when you see how the story is full of random words.
There are two versions of each Christmas Mad Libs I create – one that is a bit more challenging and uses parts of speech like adjectives, and one that is easier and asks for more specific things like size or action. Use the one that works for your audience.

You can print one basic copy of the printout to play as a group, or you can pair up in groups of two and give each group their own copy. One person asks the other the words that match the prompts in the blank field. The other person gives funny answers without knowing what they are talking about. At the end, the story is read with suggested words so everyone can laugh at the silly Christmas story.
Mad libs is a fun game to play in the classroom, on field trips, or at family gatherings. The age range for playing Mad Libs is basically 3-100+. After everyone has updated their words (adverbs, adjectives, etc.), you can come up with silly short stories together. They are a fun way to develop vocabulary and reading comprehension while playing with friends and family.
